Many American sandwiches can only be found in one very specific location or region (or restaurant), but even those that have ventured beyond their birthplaces are generally best enjoyed in their original context. Sandwich history can be layered and complicated, but, like a good sandwich, rarely dry. American sandwiches are often surrounded by unexpected controversy, and naming the definitive version of any one of these sandwiches will almost certainly spark an argument. Argue if you will, but let’s argue it over one of these 20 American regional sandwiches:

I can't believe they left out the ultimate "Picksburg" sammich, Primant's with the fries and slaw in the sammich.
Never been a fan of cole slaw, but I could eat Primanti's slaw by the bucket full.
PO Boy, Cuban and Lobster roll make my list. None of the others.
There is only the Cuban. All others pale in comparison. :)
Fried shrimp with sweet potato fries and coleslaw!
No Philly Cheese steak? Writer must be some furriner.
But which version of Cuban sandwich?
South Jersey here. Sausage, peppers&onions subs here.
Lutefisk, Lutefisk, ya sure you betcha!
The Cuban sandwiches I had in Florida were made with a device, sort of like a waffle iron, which squeezed and heated the sandwich. Most of the “Cuban” sandwiches I have had in California don’t use such a device.
On a visit to Florida a few years ago, I stopped at an eatery and had a Cuban sandwich and told the proprietor that now I knew I was in Florida because I was eating a real Cuban sandwich.
They missed the pepperoni roll from central WV.
YES!
Beef on Weck is number one, as it should be.
Childhood in the 60’s ...Charles’ grinders in Willimantic ...Salami , “ Italian cheese “ , cabbage , tomato , olive oil , s&p ...State Line chips and a bottle of Pepsi ...Saturday afternoon lunch in summer ...
I love the beef on weck and it deserves to be in the top 20 BUT any sandwich list without a Primanti and DiNics pork is not valid. The raters need to get out more.
The sausage pepper sandwiches at Nica’s or Romeo’s in New Haven also out of this world.
I’ve been a regular at Phillipe the Original in downtown L.A. since I was a child as was my father and grandfather since they opened in 1908 or 1916 or something- EVERYTHING there is heaven- not just the French dip with hot mustard. Get the Mac salad, pickled eggs a Dads root beer and the cherry pie. I’ve been in 49 states I my life and nowhere else compares in any way whatsoever to Philippe the Original. Everything else is trash
Outside FL (or Cuba), the key is never order a Cuban sandwich if you are not in a legit Cuban restaurant. Anywhere else, you will get the cook's "interpretation" of a Cuban. Finding a good Cuban restaurant in CA can be almost as challenging as finding a good delicatessen. Most here are no better than your supermarket deli and use the same vac-bag meats.
I’ve lived in the Chicago area my entire life and have never once heard of the Mother In Law.
Al’s does make a solid beef and I prefer their giardienara over most. But as far as the beef and gravy goes, give me Portillos every time.
