I’ve lived in the Chicago area my entire life and have never once heard of the Mother In Law.

Al’s does make a solid beef and I prefer their giardienara over most. But as far as the beef and gravy goes, give me Portillos every time.

I moved from the area and still have family in Chicago. NO idea what a mother in law is.

ANNNNDDD another thing, when did marketing folks start calling it "Tavern Style Pizza". Thats was just normal pizza to us. Also, people in Chicago do not eat deep dish every time, its just too much. Folks outside the area do not seem to realize that.

Agree with Portillos. I am not a hot dog person, but I am for that place.

Lifelong Chicago resident here too. A small hot dog stand called Fat Johnnie’s at 72nd and Western Ave. sold them. Had a few Mother-in-laws, was told they are so called because they give you heartburn.

The Portillos in Schaumburg used to have local police direct lunch traffic in and out for weekday lunch times because of the heavy traffic.

Last time we went to the Portillos in DeKalb was the first time I noticed how much less beef was in the beef sandwich. There are a few local spots that carry it but fewer each lockdown.
