US could face coldest Christmas in YEARS as temperatures drop 'much below normal' and arctic air mass blitzes southern states: Freezing onslaught will bring major snowstorms and holiday travel chaos for millions

Much of the United States will either get a White Christmas or a bitterly cold one, as the forecasts for the country see snowstorms and temperatures in the deep south as low as the 20s.

Forecasters are warning of treacherous holiday travel and life-threatening cold for much of the nation as an arctic air mass blows into the already-frigid southern United States, with experts predicting the 'coldest Christmas in years.'

The coming week has the potential for 'the coldest air of the season' as the strong artic front marches across the eastern two-thirds of the country in the days before Christmas, according to the latest forecasts from the federal Weather Prediction Center.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 'major snowstorm' from the southwest and midwest to the eastern seaboard on next weekend, as Christmas arrives on Sunday.

According to AccuWeather, the storm may begin Wednesday in the Rockies, with snow potentially showing up as far south as Dallas and Nashville.

The storm will likely head toward the east coast, but as rain, as we hit the weekend, with one meteorologist telling the New York Daily News that flight delays and cancellations are to be expected.

Regardless of weather you get snow or just freezing rain, you can be expecting a chill as Santa arrives on the 25th.

'We're looking at much-below normal temperatures, potentially record-low temperatures leading up to the Christmas holiday,' said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The polar air arrives as an earlier storm system gradually winds down in the northeastern U.S. after burying parts of the region under two feet of snow.

All good ideas! I keep an emergency bag in my car just like this, but I’m not sure my son is as careful!

It’s Winter, why does everyone get so hyperventilated when we get the typical weather and the fact that it snows and gets cold.

What weathermen used to call the “Siberian Express” or “Alberta Clipper” in the days before Glo-Bull Warming!

By the way, where is that “Glo-Bull” Warming?

Extra blankets, hard candy, a can or two of STERNO. That is what we were told to carry in autos back in 1968 Alaska, in the military.

I had a beat up old Opel in Germany in 73. The heater didn’t work, so we took a hanger and made it into a holder for a can of Sterno. It hung from the glove compartment and heated the car, but probably wasn’t a smart thing to do.

SW Wisconsin is colder than normal. Waiting to see that Wed/Thurs brings as far as snow. We're either getting a little or a HUGE dump - they can't tell us, yet. Either way, we're running errands today, then hunkering in for the rest of the week. If we get a lot of snow, it should all be cleaned up by Monday the 26th, when we're hosting Christmas at the farm. Either way, my house will be clean. ;)

P.S. It's WINTER! We've done this before!

Prepper ping - Unseasonably cold and freezing, with snowfall may lead to power outages, and massive home heating ability loss
Be aware of snowfall, icing, and possible streams and rivers flooding
If you have to travel around the Holiday, have a "Winter Kit" all packed up to go with you,
according to the number of people traveling, pets, and regional climatic conditions.
If staying put at home, increase home comfort by increasing home humidity with humidifier, or a boiling kettle

metmom :" This weather system is alarming. It has all the ingredients of a major winter storm.

"It’s very strong, high winds, it’s going to be cold until it warms suddenly and starts to rain.
That usually ends in icing as the surfaces of objects don’t have a chance to warm before the rain hits them,
and so the rain freezes on contact."
The snowpack, of those of us who have it, will become saturated, and then the temperature is expected to drop rapidly Friday evening to Saturday morning
which will freeze the water logged snowpack into a brick of ice, and then the precip is as likely as not to change to a period of freezing rain or sleet ,
before switching over to snow again..
Of course, all that rain on frozen ground will just run off, resulting 8n localized flooding."

Sacajaweau :" I boil a kettle of water for 30 to 40 minutes. Going from 35& to 45% makes a huge difference in comfort.
It’ll hold up for almost the whole day."
