Weekly Garden Thread - December 10-16, 2022 [The Legend of the Poinsettia Edition]
December 10, 2022 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 12/10/2022 6:36:50 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

((Pollard)) I have total faith in you. You are going to be just fine.

Thanks for the update. I’ve lived through ‘rebuilding years’ too, and in every case, the years that followed were better than the years I left behind.

I’m certain it will be the same for you! :)

Surgery was scheduled for 10 this morning, but dad’s cardiologist doesn’t come to this hospital. Anesthesiologist wants echo dad had in April. 100 yo (for all practical purposes) with heart issues - doing due diligence & “better safe than sorry”. He had nothing to eat since Friday night, but with surgery postponed, he can eat today until midnight which should help along with more aggressive pain management. He’s priority on the schedule for surgery tomorrow.

Hubby found this on Gab, no link but I found the tik tok channel. This guy had lots of good Florida gardening videos.
Link is to a particular one hubby found this morning, 60 year old guy making 7500.00 a month on a huge front yard garden. Just beautiful. His channel has a lot I will look at later. I don’t really prowl around tik tok but this one is good.

So this guy has a youtube channel that is even better called Green Dreams. Some nice videos of the older guy from the tik tok video. One talks about how he plants 25000 soil blocks a year. Great channel, better than tik tok.

Glad you are feeling somewhat better! Sounds like a good day to stay in bed. (A bit late for Radio Church! :) More Good news is that it is a Packers by-week! You can rest and get well instead of sitting on the couch watching TV and yelling at the Packers.

(I think you know about these herbs already, so info for others!)

Some gardener herbs for colds / flu: (Of course, per standard WebMD boilerplate “here is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses.”!)
Cat Mint (Nepeta cataria) Tea, tincture from leaves;
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) tea, tincture;
Elderberry (Sambucus Canadensis Nigra IIRC) tea and tincture.

Possibly Dandilion root tea, according to this research. ! Dandelion extract inhibits SARS-CoV-2 in vitro (In vitro, needs human modeling!) and Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) efficiently blocks the interaction between ACE2 cell surface receptor and SARS-CoV-2 spike protein D614, mutants D614G, N501Y, K417N and E484K in vitro

(Of course, per standard WebMD boilerplate “here is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses.”!)

There are other things. Quercetin and Ivermectin in Applesauce and stuff. (Tonic water too!) I imagine Little Jeremiah would have some other herbals for you!

(Vitamin D3 5000 IU and zinc and C and tinctures of the above; Mix tinctures in a shot of Svedka Mandarine vodka and go to bed!)

I couldn’t yell at them even if I wanted to. And if anyone deserves to be yelled at, it’s my Packers these days!

At least Aaron shaved and cut the ‘wings’ off of his stupid haircut, LOL!

I'm usually a Traditionalist when it comes to Poinsettia; I like a clear red or a clear white, but I have fallen for 'Jungle Bells' in the past:

They cut through the BS & ordered a new Echo, called in a tech to do it tonight, so that hurdle is crossed. Hopefully, the anesthesiologist will be satisfied & surgery will be first thing tomorrow. It was a tough day today.

I’m feeling better, today. I can breath through my nose, so there’s hope, LOL!

Today I am tackling laundry and the mountain of Kleenex that has piled up around here from BOTH of us being down.

Luckily I was 2 days behind Beau, so I did animal chores early last week and he finished up. I know he feels better as he went hunting last night - though he’d do that with a missing limb if he had a mind to.

Still waiting for surgery - mom & I were here at 6 a.m.Even the nurse is getting frustrated. We were told he would be “priority” on the surgical schedule today - evidently, their definition of priority is different from ours.

“Meanwhile, back at the motel” ... (Ray Stevens song) I have been cancelling appointments, trying to get a ramp installed ....

If your Rural hospital is anything like ours, the Doctors do the Animal Husbandry Rounds FIRST, THEN they take care of the humans. ;)

(Hope that made you smile...)

Made me laugh out loud!

As soon as I hit “send”, nurse came in with 1:00 time. At least we have something tentative.

At this point, I think dad would be fine with a vet fixing his hip! :-)
