Sanders, 55, previously coached three seasons of college football, finishing 27-5 at Jackson State University in Mississipp.
The University of Colorado has announced that former NFL star Deion Sanders will be the school's next head football coach.
"There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the next head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders," Colorado Buffaloes Athletic Director Rick George said Saturday evening.
Sanders, 55, previously coached three seasons of college football, finishing 27-5 at Jackson State University in Mississippi.
Known as "Prime Time" during his nine Major League Baseball seasons and 14 NFL seasons, Sanders, also an NFL hall of famer, has since been given the nickname "Coach Prime." His first game at Colorado will be Sept. 2.
"Not only will Coach Prime energize our fanbase, I'm confident that he will lead our program back to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character," George said.
Spurrier was cool.
Prime Time!......................
This is a good hire. Go Deion.
Tough gig. The Buffalos have not been consistently good since the 1980s and McCartney as HC. Good in the 1990s with Kordell Stewart at QB but lame since.
With Deion t the helm, he’ll be able to recruit good players, just on his name alone.................
I watched it earlier today and he wants the losers to clear out now.
Heβs bringing his QB son with him too
Sanders has apparently been successful as a recruiter and coach. As a player though, he was a terrible role model. The nonstop trashtalking was bad enough on its own, but Sanders was notorious for not just being a terrible tackler, but being reckless and dangerous as well, leading with his head and diving at legs.
Because of his talents elsewhere (he really was amazing as a pass defender) and the attention he drew to himself, kids all over the nation imitated the parts of his game that they could imitate, namely the trash talking and terrible form tackling. Lots of concussions and damaged joints resulted. Even the kids who didn’t injure themselves or someone else still had terrible tackling form.
I don’t know if he ever attempted to make amends for the damage he caused to the game of football and the lives he impacted. The interviews I’ve seen or heard him address that in, he would downplay it and imply his other talents were so good that it didn’t matter.
Auburn blew it big time. If they had hired Dione Sanders, they would have overtaken Alabama and would have become a national powerhouse. The problem is Sanders would have displaced the good old boys. That just was not going to happen.
Auburn will rue the day that they decided not to offer their HC job to Coach Prime.
Over two hundred have put in for transfer protocol to CU in first 10 hrs. after Dion named head coach......wow
He is a very good man. He started Road to Jerusalem and has been a big supporter of the Messianic Movement. Dion will also be a bright Christian witness in a very dark place.
2022 University of Colorado football is 1-1l.
Perfect fertile ground for Deion and his leadership. Nowhere to go but up.
This is a huge loss for HBUCs, The state of Mississippi, Jackson, and Jackson State.
You cannot understand how broken and dysfunctional Mississippi is, and especially Jackson, is until you try to spend a weekend at an event in Jackson. Everything is broken. Coach Prime was the only thing that worked.
1-11?
Who did they beat?....................
I was raised in Mississippi..............πππ
