I try to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way, and I was asked by Bob Bell, the author of numerous books on Mausers, to help the widow of one of his friends evaluate her late husband’s collection. David Stefanye was the chief scientist of the U.S. Army Research and Development Command at Fort Belvoir, VA, and the leading expert on early Mausers. He had an extensive collection of European arms, and I received quite the education while I researched and examined every item in his inventory.
I opened one box that held nearly a dozen semi-automatic pistols with which I had zero familiarity: the Polish VIS 35. Each one represented a different configuration that could be found during its short decade of production. Not only was I enthralled by them, but once I acquired one for myself a few years later, it instantly became my favorite 9 mm.

A common mistake of modern shooters. Like the original sights on the 1911. Exceedingly small sights were used and considered precision.
They regularly practiced shooting at steel drums out to 300 yards and more. The small sight makes that possible rather than the wide modern sights on guns today. At 300 yards, the sight might be 8 drums wide.
People were still even sometimes on horseback then. And up close they used a point shooting style so the small sight was not a problem.
They weren’t idiots back then. Annoying when modern shooters pass their judgements on things they really do not understand correctly because they are blinded by modern tools and techniques.
Germany used the Radom in great numbers...
They are well designed pistols. My later war example is German marked and less finely finished as was typical of weapons manufactured in haste. I have a Czech CZ-27 with WaffenAmt markings along with a Beretta Model 1934 9mm Corto and Beretta Model 1935 7.65mm, both with WaffenAmts. Countries conquered by the Germans in WW2 would have their arms factories continue production but with German Markings ususally. German marked FN High Powers from Belgium are highly sought after by collectors and were prized by German soldiers during the war. FN Model 1922’s in 9mm Corto are also seen with German Markings.
Bingo dead on perfect post ...... I carried a Browning High Power Custom from Cylinder & Slide when I was assigned to Task Force 6, narcotics interdiction in Central & South America in the 80’s with a very small custom novak sight. Point shooter for CQB but steel noise at 300 meters .

It’s really fascinating. Sights on our 1911s were amazingly small. But at long range, they were precise. From horseback, they were shooting point method at enemies that were practically in personal combat with them.
People forget, in those days, they were putting theory into practice and put a LOT of thought into things.
If you ever find one with those skimpy sights, give it a try at long range.
It’ll astonish you.
