Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie dies aged 79: Singer-songwriter with legendary band famed as much for their fractious relationships as their music - passes away surrounded by her family following 'short illness'

Christine McVie, the co-lead vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist of Fleetwood Mac, has died aged 79 following a 'short illness', her family have revealed.

In a statement, McVie's family said she was 'a revered musician who was loved universally' and was surrounded by loved ones when she died.

'She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th following a short illness. She was in the company of her family.

'We kindly ask that you respect the family's privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being.'

Her former bandmates said tonight they're devastated by the loss, describing her as 'the best friend anyone could have in their life'.

'She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure... She was the best musician anyone could have in their band. We were so lucky to have a life with her.

'Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.'

Stevie Nicks shared the statement to her own Twitter account this evening.

The British-American rock band was one of the most successful groups of all time, selling 100 million records globally.

McVie joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971 as a permanent member, and the band achieved even greater popularity with the addition of Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham in the mid-1970s.

Sorry to hear. That era is leaving at a rapid rate.

What the hell kind of “short illness” was that? I don’t want it.

I was never a fan, though I liked a few songs.

The embrace of them by the Democrat Party made the sound of their music become like nails on a chalkboard.

“Rap” — how could I have forgotten that? Now that is truly the one that is our downfall (not kidding there). What’s not to like about glorification of drugs, cop killing, ho’s and putting whitey in his place?

Your second such comment in the last couple of threads about her. I bet you are fun at parties! A badge wearing member of the “no fun police”.

Her ex-husband's old boss (John Mayall) just turned 89 - that's just 11 years shy of 100.

Man, that makes me, um, 39?

I guess it didn’t happen.

The 70’s codified it.

RIP Christine.

IMO the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame did a disservice to Bob Welch when they omitted mention of his contributions to Fleetwood Mac.

The crowd dancing and celebrating Clinton’s to Fleetwood Mac exemplifies the fall of our nation and there’s a direct line to today woke totalitarianism.

Christine had a special talent for writing pop songs with just the right combination of “hook” for popular airplay and uniqueness that allowed them to stand the test of time. Her musicianship was always at the core of the songs that even Stevie or Lindsay are associated with. RIP to one of rock’s legends.

Noooooo! I’ve followed her since her days as a great part of Chicken Shack - (British Blues band from the 60’s)

I knew she was having some very private health concerns and she only a few days ago, retired from Fleetwood Mac.

Great voice, and she actually enunciated so one could understand the lyrics.

Bands like that led to our nation’s demise.

Tipper Gore would absolutely agree with you.

“Bands like that led to our nation’s demise.”

LOL! Get a grip dude. Her songs are as tame as they get.

Preferred Christine by a long shot over Stevie Nicks.

Tipper Gore did not call out this band. They used it for their campaign.

But your observation is good.

It was an early example of how the acceptance of crap as mainstream and wholesome evolved.

She completely disavowed PMRC.

It’s like how all of them were against redefining marriage. Now it’s sacrosanct dogma.

Now they have to accept the vileness thrust upon the society or they aren’t good people in their theology.
