SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Four University of Idaho students who were found dead in a rental house near campus were stabbed to death in their beds and likely were asleep when they were attacked, a county coroner told a cable news channel.
Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt also told NewsNation on Thursday that each victim suffered multiple stab wounds from a “pretty large knife.”
“It has to be somebody pretty angry in order to stab four people to death,” Mabbutt told NewsNation. The victims were stabbed in the chest and upper body, the coroner said.
Efforts by The Associated Press to reach Mabbutt by telephone Friday were diverted to an Idaho State Police spokesperson, who did not immediately return messages.
In an evening statement, Moscow Police Department confirmed the coroner reported the victims were likely asleep and that some of the victims had defensive wounds. Police additionally said there were no signs of sexual assault.
Comments from Mabbutt and the police expanded on autopsy reports released Thursday, which concluded the four students were murdered by being stabbed to death.
Officers have not identified a suspect or found a weapon.
The killings have shaken Moscow, an Idaho Panhandle town of 25,000 residents that last saw a homicide about five years ago. The leafy college town is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of Spokane, Washington.
All four victims were members of fraternities and sororities: seniors Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho; junior Xana Kernodle, 20, of Post Falls, Idaho; and freshman Ethan Chapin, 20, of Mount Vernon, Washington. The women were roommates. The bodies were found around noon Sunday.
Moscow police released a map Friday and later its statement with a rough timeline of events leading up to the deaths.

Those ladies must have been very close. They always seem to be always touching in the pics I’ve seen.
I just knew it.
Like someone else here said, Ted Bundy style. Like when he killed the poor girls at Florida State University, moved quietly from room to room attacking them. So quiet the next room occupants didn’t even wake up.
It might have been possible depending how they were sleeping. If they got the guy first and he was sleeping alone. If they were split up in different rooms with no more than 2 to a room, maybe. It would still be very difficult for this to not wake up others around the house with just 1 person, everything would have to go just so in their favor.
It took a couple or more years to find the killers in Iowa of the Pike County Massacre where six people were shot in their sleep, except for the infant and toddler. The sixteen year old had been shot multiple times since he awakened. (they had silencers), then fled to Alaska. Everyone was speculating Mexican drug cartels or the Cornbread Mafia. It turned out to be a dispute in custody of the three year old child of the mother, Hannah, and her boyfriend who pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty, and to testify against other family members. I think one trial is still going on.
I’ll guess two (at least).
Members of the football team or basketball team two of the girls either broke up with or refused to date? /shiny side out.
Well, hey, too many “Forensic Files” shows. So admittedly, that’s just a guess.
The average person doesn’t have Seal Team skills.
Has to be at least two guys, IMHO.
If they were asleep how could there be defensive wounds?
Kids? I was married with a daughter ar 21. In Air Force at 22. Serious as a heart attack about life.
Sounds like a crazy ex-roomate.
Who exactly was texting? The killer, perhaps?
Weird crime…killer had to get to house and leave somehow…covered in blood and probable cuts on his arms and hands as well…must live alone to be able to clean up, dispose of clothing, knife…did killer use a vehicle or was on foot?…vehicle would have to be cleaned too…RIP young people, prayers sent for all the family and friends…
I don’t think so, but of course, not sure. I’ve read where the guy being texted was an old boyfriend who never replied. No idea if any of that is true.
“Hard to believe that no one yelled or screamed.”
Hard to scream with your wind pipe severed.
Of course, if someone in their association did have those skills, he would become a person of interest quickly.
Has the timeline of the activities of the dating couple been completed? There was like a four or five hour gap after they left the fraternity party until they were accounted for at the house. I have a hunch that something important to the investigation happened to them during that time and the police are withholding that information so as to not compromise the investigation. Might also be why the police could so confidently state that the attacks were targeted because of what they know happened in that time frame to that couple. The whole food-truck, multiple phone calls, and who gave them a ride home stuff might have been totally unrelated to the crime and these two were collateral damage in the attack that was directed at the dating couple.
I think Ohio.
My guess is the two cute girls were the target and the couple was collateral damage. But, again, that’s just a guess.
Guess we’ll find out in due time. I suppose.
You’re right, and it was 8 people murdered. I was just watching Jake Wagner’s breakdown of testimony, but he had the right to refuse to be broadcasted while on the stand according to the laws in that state.

Unless it was consignment. Biggie spelled it out in the 10 crack commandments.
Never sell no dope where you live at, I don’t care if they want an ounce, tell ‘em bounce.
And the least bloody, if done at an upward angle.
Wow, even way back when Harry Morgan was on the show! That’s surprising. Was that the early 60s?
