HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla. — The bones stuck out of the sand.
Dakota Brady, 30, said he was with some friends at Chastain Beach in southeast Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Nicole when they discovered human remains.
“It was just surreal. Just to think that this is something that we walk on on a daily basis and nobody knows. Everybody’s oblivious to it," Brady said.
Authorities learned of the remains soon after.
Investigators are examining what they said are likely human remains of the indigenous Ais tribe on Hutchinson Island, a barrier island along the Atlantic about 50 miles north of the West Palm Beach area.
The remains are likely from an Ais burial ground, said Chief Deputy John Budensiek.
Budensiek said investigators found six human skulls as of Thursday afternoon. The bones are fragmented, so they don’t have a total count of remains.
It was the first time Brady had an experience like this.

Another Catholic Church mass grave. /sarc
reminds me of the joke...
A small two-seater Cessna 152 plane crashed into a cemetery early this afternoon.
Search and rescue workers have found two survivors and recovered 300 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the evening.
Cue the cries of whitey stole our land in 3, 2, 1…
Time to shut down the Atlantic.
So...who has dibs on the beach if sea turtles start traipsing thru the burial ground...the indigenous dead or the turtles?
When do the Indians build their new casino
There gonna need one big ass roll of crime scene tape!!
This is weird...in the last three days, I have seen three separate references to “Poltergeist”...I rented the movie from the library on a whim...a co-worker mentioned it to me yesterday, and now this!
The movie has a funny memory for me-I grew up in a military family, and whenever you went to a movie at a base theater, they would play the National Anthem, and everyone would stand up, en masse.
Then, I joined the Navy, and that custom continued. I had been out of the Navy only a short time, and went with a bunch of friends as a civilian to see “Poltergeist” in the theater when it came out back in the early Eighties.
If you have ever seen the movie and recall, the very beginning of the movie starts with the National Anthem no precursor, nothing to tell you it was the actual movie, so I dutifully, with about 20 years of habit, stood up at attention.
In the gloom around me, I realized nobody else was standing up, so I kind of embarrassingly halfway sat down, but I couldn’t sit, it was just ingrained into me so thoroughly that I involuntarily stood back up, and after a few seconds more, I observed that nobody was standing up, but I thought “Hey. I am going to stand for this” and stood right back up.
I must have looked like a Jack-in-the-box!
Then when it reached the end of that introduction and it was clear that it was part of the movie, I sheepishly sat down and watched the rest of the movie. My friends all understood and thought it was hilarious, but I suspect those other patrons in the theater had no idea what this guy was doing bouncing up and down!
In Brevard county there is a site called Windover.
A backhoe digging a drainage ditch came up with a human skull, sheriff was called, then some anthropologists. The site turns out to be 1/4 acre in size with 168 mummified bodies due to the anaerobic bog conditions. Some of the oldest brain material recovered comes from this site as wheel as woven material and objects placed with the remains.
Their is a new underwater site off Manasota Key where I did my check dive in 1973. I never new I was diving over a graveyard.

LOL...it is posts like yours (and seemingly, the only reason these days) that make me want to visit. That was a hilarious image it put into my mind!
Hahahaha I think I am watching that movie tonight!
One of the best-made horror story movies EVER!!!!
Glad they found them AFTER the election, or we coulda lost Florida too!
For nostalgia! I must watch it, it is sitting on the table at home!
I don’t know how that movie will age-I may watch it and think it is completely cheesy, but...I suspect I will enjoy it!
Nicole is now cancelled.
Any further mention of her name is banned forever!
Seriously. I have to laugh...or I’d cry.
Wow! To see a whole skull like that!
