The Boston City Council is taking aim at Walgreens after the company chose to close three stores in Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Roxbury.
The council plans to use their legislative powers to stop Walgreens from opening any future stores in the city unless they halt the closures. An ultimatum like this is not unprecedented. Former Mayor Thomas Menino sent a letter to Chic-Fil-A, telling the company not to open in the city because of their views on same-sex marriage.
"We can use whatever leverage we have, which is our zoning code, and leverage that to get them to make sure they come back to the table," explained Brian Worrell, the City Councilor for District 4. The Walgreens closure on River Street in Mattapan is within his district.
Without the three locations, the council believes pharmacy deserts will be created. They say the majority of residents in those areas don't use cars to get around.
"We are talking about predominantly working-class Black and brown communities that relied on Walgreens for many, many years, " said Worrell. "Now we are stripping a major resource away from them. We are talking about places where communities have got their food, their medication, their COVID vaccines."

What irony:
* Democrat government lets rampant crime go unchecked.
* Stores close because they cannot sustain the losses and insurers raised rates or dropped them.
* The very same Democrat government that caused the stores to leave now threatens those stores that they cannot leave.
SOLUTION: Build state-run pharmacies and drug stores with empty shelves. Let the people there enjoy their communism to the fullest.
Maybe if ghetto trash didn’t steal so much, the stores would stay...
What is so complicated about running a prosperous city? You need law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, and jails to stop crime. You need trash and snow removal. You need well maintained roads. You need sewage, water and utilities. You need schools. That leads to crime free, clean neighborhoods with businesses that employ educated people.
I have no idea what nirvana Democrats are going for when they spend tax dollars.
Boston is physically a very small city—surrounded by dozens of close in suburbs.
Walgreens could easily close down all Boston locations and open new ones in Brookline, Newton, Cambridge, Somerville etc and not a lose in dime in revenue or profit.
Maybe Walgreens should come out against same-sex marriage 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Problem solved!
That’s what I was thinking. If they proceed with it Just post a notice on the doors of all the remainder saying they’re closed effective immediately.
the criminals in those areas stripped these stores from the residents along with the Democrats politicians who refuse to stop the crime.
I’m sure the high cost of rent, taxes, etc. Also factor in.
The Boston Marxists.
“We are talking about predominantly working-class Black and brown communities that relied on Walgreens for many, many years,”
Well maybe if that predominantly working-class black and brown communities respected those shop owners and didn’t keep abusing them by robbing them blind this might not have been an issue.
If you don't have a car and don't have a grocery store nearby you'll have problems. Pharmacies, not so much. There's buses and the subway and the delivery option.
"We are talking about predominantly working-class Black and brown communities that relied on Walgreens for many, many years, " said Worrell.
He could have made his point without dragging race into it. Oh, wait ... America 2022, he couldn't have.
This might also be an opportunity for entrepreneurs to get involved. But maybe shoplifting is so common that nobody dares to open up a new store.
If they can’t open in better areas without opening up the ones in bad areas.. I recommend them closing up ALL of their shops in that region.
There is a lot of renovation or gentrification even in these areas, but following the forced bussing and the ‘White Flight’ of the 1970s, few will consider traversing into those establishment. Meanwhile, Municipal employees and Politicians make great money, have fantastic pensions, and they fiddle.
I’d tell them to pound salt. Next step is government-operated pharmacies and groceries. That’s the ultimate socialist goal, isn’t it?
The only sane response is to close every Walgreens in Boston. The pimp slap does exist for a reason. Governments across America, at all levels need to be brought to heel.
No pharmacist is going to want to work there.
“shoplifting is so common that nobody dares to open up a new store.”
In bad areas shoplifting is just part of the problem. Employee theft can sometimes be a bigger issue. Employee retention and hiring is another problem.
Quality employees do not have to work in dangerous locations where the job is five times as hard as other areas.
True.
Government causes this by wide open border with no vetting of serious crimes or gang membership of new arrivals who then go to places all over the US.
Plus government has a stake in continuing chaos and crime waves——more power over citizens, giving up in belief in our Republic by victims and taking of weapons away to end the “gun violence” by the criminals.
