A 16-year-old girl was in serious condition after being mauled by six of her family’s large dogs at their home in Southern California over the weekend, authorities said.
A neighbor called 911 to report the attack around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Thousand Oaks, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.
Sheriff’s Capt. Ron Chips said the teen suffered “several significant lacerations and dog bites to her head, torso, and arms.” The girl’s mother was also bit, but not seriously injured, he said.
The dogs were identified as cane corsos, a type of mastiff, the Ventura County Star reported Monday.
When firefighters arrived at the home, they attempted to stop the attack by blasting their truck sirens and waving their tools, officials said.

The Jaws of Life could come in real handy to pry those dog jaws off a person’s leg.
I don’t doubt it.
Our last dog was an American Akita. Not as large as your and he was usually a sweetheart, but he could also take a sudden dislike to someone and just launch at them, complete with snarl.
The more primitive breeds are not always stable. I admit to having a weakness for them, but we are just too old for that type of dog any longer.
Our previous Akita, much more Japanese with some American Husky thrown in there somewhere, was a total lovebug. Then he had a stroke, lost his hearing along with back end control and his demeanor went very negative. He was 13 and we likely tried to keep him too long, so it was our fault.
Well, I’ve known one Staffordshire who would lick any intruder into submission and I have a friend who is an official pit bull rescuer (the local sheriff would call her first when they had a rescue) whose record so far is perfect for well-behaved and well-socialized animals. I’ve known 4 of her dogs and none of them were scary, ever, even a pack.
That said, I never saw anyone threaten her in their presence...that may have made a difference.
Very loyal dogs. She spends hours working them almost every day, which probably makes a difference.
Our two former Akitas could be a handful. Stubborn, with minds of their own. The one with Husky genes loved being naughty. He would just do what he wanted and his expression when he broke the rules was always like he was laughing at us. The *purebred* (American Akitas are essentially a mix) loved to go off on bunny runs. We had 80 acres at the time, so it was cool. Couldn’t have one now with only 3 acres and neighbors.
Wow, that dog sounds like trouble waiting to happen.
Just a big puppy. Mastiff-types are pretty good babysitters. I wouldn’t want s pack of them, though.
That’s two dogs over the limit in that area.
Once again, there are no golden retrievers involved in this tragedy...
Best common breed overall IMO
There are other great breeds as well but golden retrievers are the best.
