The kids don't know what that means any moar than they know what "float" means. I always used to write a check to buy groceries on Friday after noon. That way the night drop wouldn't be picked up by the bank until Monday morning and that check could float until Monday night.
I had a problem with my card a couple of years ago. So for a few days when I had no card. I wrote a check for my groceries for the first time in years.
The Cashier took my check, inserted it into the register, and a few seconds later the check was completely processed, canceled out and everything just as it had been actually handled by the bank. The money was withdrawn and they handed me back my check. I had no idea that they did such things.
No more check kiting in my life.

We are in the process of adopting a black lab puppy from a great dog rescue we got our current dog from. Not sure we are first in line for him. Should know on Thursday.

HMS Indefatigable was one of the Ardent-class 64-gun third-rate ships-of-the-line designed by Sir Thomas Slade in 1761 for the Royal Navy. She was built as a ship-of-the-line, but most of her active service took place after her conversion to a 44-gun razee frigate. Razeed frigates combined the hull strength, sail power, and lower deck armament of a ship-of-the-line in a much lighter package. This made them fast and powerful. Then Captain Sir Edward Pellew's share of prize money in Indefatigable amounted to $5-10M in today's purchasing power making him one of the most successful frigate captains in history.
