My friend was telling me he was watching the pregame show for the MLB playoff game between the New York Yankees and the now Cleveland Guardians. [The game is currently rained out]
The announcers are Ernie Johnson and Hall-of-Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez. Martinez started calling them the Indians, and Johnson tried to current him, but Martinez just keeps calling them the Indians. Johnson was visibly annoyed and kept saying, "You mean Guardians."
Even after the commercial break, he came back and said Indians. And Johnson was saying Guardians as many times as he could, and it became passive aggressive
It’s still a stupid name.
The team formerly known as the Indians can move to Homosassa, FL, and their nicknames WON’T be the Sassas
You can’t assume that here on FR. Not unless you know the poster.
And I don’t really know or remember anyone I might reply to here.
Can’t bring myself to pull for any team with Manny Machado on it.
I’ve got no problem with it.
He can say “Indians” till he’s old and gray. Still won’t have an issue with it. Might join him, in fact.
I call them the Guarindians.
ALDS Game 5 now set for Tuesday evening at Yankee Stadium. Two major consequences of postponing. 1) The winner will have to fly to Houston and start the ALCS Wednesday night. 2) The Garanimals can now bring back Shane Beiber on normal rest to pitch Game 5.
and I still call the football Giants the New York Goofball Giants. Yeah, I know they're 5-1, but they can't keep it up.
I Google Yankees vs Indians to check the score.
And I still call Stanford, the Indians.
I was near Cleveland in the late 70’s, when it was at it’s lowest (Kuchinich was mayor). Atleast they didn’t fall for this crap. Alex Bevan needs to weigh in.
The “Colts” should be called the Indiana Irsays.
And the Baltimore team the BaltiModells.
Game was postponed until tomorrow. (rain in NY)
LOL....I know...I live in NYC....on the subway right now with my umbrella.
“My brother lived there for years and told us the history.. The new team is named for the Guardian sculptures who have watch over Hope Memorial Bridge since the 1920s.”
Yes. I’d heard this.
I think that it also ended in -dians played a role.
“The name sounds kind of fascist”
That’s what I thought. Or paternalistic.
From the woke point of view it doesn’t seem like a good name.
I still call the Baltimore Orioles the St. Louis Browns.
Just kidding.
That was the point.
Doesn’t Utah still have an Indian name?
probably 1/3 of the continental states names?
Agree. I have good memories of a few Indians games in the ‘60s.
And I HATE this woke crap, changing names, messing with monuments, etc. Technically it can be undone if/when sanity returns, but it never will.
