Many people have been in the shower when that brilliant, light bulb moment suddenly strikes! It can seem like a strange place to have great ideas, but researchers say “shower thoughts” are pretty common. So, why do so many people get a spark of creativity while washing up?
While previous research has suggested that people get more creative when their mind wanders, a new study finds that those mindless tasks (like showering) aren’t so mindless after all.
The new study challenges past research that seemed to prove what many scientists thought about letting the mind wander. That study found that when people perform “undemanding” tasks, the brain tends to wander. When that happens, creativity starts to flow.

“I have the ‘Box of Unmatched Socks’ on the floor of my bedroom closet.
Unmatched sock? Toss it in the box.
Every few months sort through the box and mates will be found!”
I use the big comfortable/padded chair we bought for my wife to nurse our oldest son 55+ years ago.
Due to damaged feet, I use at least 2 pair a day. It seems like one sock is always missing between taking them off, dropping them in the laundry basket and then doing the wash in the laundry room.
It used to drive my type A wife nuts until her post hip surgery, she often uses 2 pair of socks a day.
So now she joins me and half of that big chair is for her lost socks. The other half is mine.
Buy exactly the same socks.
That is what I do.
Same color same brand
Toss the rest
” I use at least 2 pair a day “
Me too.
Daytime socks and the heavy nighttime fleece ‘slipper socks’
to keep my feet warm at night.
that is what the drain is for.
Paraphrasing gandalf, minds that wonder are not lost.
I do my best thinking when I’m refurbing old neglected drum sets.
Thomas Edison's Secret Trick to Maximize His Creativity by Falling Asleep
That’s funny. It never happened that way with me. Was I supposed to be showering alone?

“At the time Iowa was a dry state and Atanasoff wanted a drink to abolish his frustrations. He left without a particular destination in mind and ended up over 200 miles away in Rock Island, Illinois, where he was finally able to order himself a cocktail. As he sat down he realized the drive had relieved his mind of clutter. Four separate ideas began to intersect and he scribbled his intellections on a cocktail napkin. He was later quoted, stating, “It was at an evening of scotch and 100 mph car rides, when the concept came...”...”
I read that Winston Churchill dictated letters, newspaper articles and books while soaking in his bathtub. I feel sorry for his secretary.
Another great idea someone had in the shower? The hot tub.
Hmpf. Who knew?
Probably 100s of millions of grant dollars funded this “discovery”. What meaningful difference does it make?
Ask the guys who landed the grant.
I use a trick.
I purchase 2 dozen at a time of the same brand and toss out all the others.
So when I got to them sock drawer I just grab any two and they match.
I have noticed that special boot socks are still subject fo the mysterious sock black hole influence but the interchangeable ones...who knows. Lol
About a decade ago, my wife would mutter in her sleep and wake up and go back to sleep.
A friend told her to write down her thoughts. I just laughed.
So she wrote down her awakening thoughts. After about 3 nites she started laughing at how non~sensical her thoughts were.
I laughed and told her that over 3 decades, I knew that her early morning/late in bed thoughts were just random and had no real meaning.
Literally LOL! So true!
One of my direct managers was pathological re dressing and not wasting his time.
Every shirt was a plain white Oxford dress shirt with no buttons on the collars. His socks were all black and mid calf in length.
He wore black suit jackets and black dress pants with no cuffs. He didn’t use cufflinks nor tie clasps. His ties were basically shades of black stripes and only one brand.
I tried something like that but I just wound up with a box of left socks so I had to throw them out and start over.
Now it doesnt make a difference what color they are, I match them by thickness.
.
That's how I match my nighttime fleece lined slipper socks - thickness.
Gotta keep my feet warm at night, ya know...
