Electric vehicles are exploding from water damage after Hurricane Ian, top Florida official warns

A top Florida state official warned Thursday that firefighters have battled a number of fires caused by electric vehicle (EV) batteries waterlogged from Hurricane Ian.

EV batteries that have been waterlogged in the wake of the hurricane are at risk of corrosion, which could lead to unexpected fires, according to Jimmy Patronis, the state's top financial officer and fire marshal.

"There’s a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start," Patronis tweeted Thursday. "That’s a new challenge that our firefighters haven’t faced before. At least on this kind of scale."

"It takes special training and understanding of EVs to ensure these fires are put out quickly and safely," he continued in a follow-up tweet. "Thanks to [North Collier Fire Rescue] for their hard work."

Patronis published a video of firefighters in Naples, Florida, battling a fire started from a Tesla EV's battery. A bystander is overheard in the video saying that the crew had used hundreds of gallons of water attempting to put the fire out.

Last week, Hurricane Ian pummeled cities along Florida's west coast including Naples and Fort Myers, making landfall as a Category 4 storm. The hurricane caused more than 100 deaths and over a million residents to lose power.

It is unclear how many EVs were impacted or destroyed by the storm.

Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly turning to EVs as the Biden administration continues to push a green transition involving zero-emission cars.

Between April and June, EVs accounted for 5.6% of new car purchases in the U.S., up slightly from the first three months of 2022, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Your new EV doubles as an IED.

OK, that was good.

The disposal plan is to dump the worn out batteries in third-world countries. Poison their environment. Out of sight out of mind so the rich leftists will feel righteous.

Fires happen in all vehicles.

174,000 is 476 vehicle fires per day all year long.

Do we read hundreds of reports about them all year long as
if it’s something very unusual?

No.

I have yet to find an prospective buyer or an owner who cares about that.

I also don’t know any who’ve read their insurance policy thoroughly.

Bet some folks are going to be in for one rude awakening.

Yup flood the EV with salt water and keep it in high humidity FL.

Check your homeowners. Specifically the GARAGE.

Insurance... I wonder that too.
Do EVs cost more to insure?
How much more?

Figure if the buyer can afford an EV that not worried about the insurance.

Because most of those fires are related to accidents, not by getting wet.

“...at risk of corrosion...”

What happens to the flooded area after all the chemicals in the batteries are leached out? Does it become a new “supersite” chemical waste dump, waiting for a billion-dollar cleanup?

Minorities and women will be hardest hit.

That argument has no weight.

The vast majority of fires in ICE cars are minor and not hard to put out, and even the larger fires don’t require the dangers, manhours and expense that all EV battery fires cause.

So if 50 EVs had fires because they got wet, that’s worse
then the 420 plus ICE cars that caught fire, in excess of
that figure?

Actually reading the stats listed regarding the fires in
ICE cars, they referenced faulty fuel lines and other issues.

I’m sure accidents do fit in there also, but I believe
they have gone a long way toward making the gas tanks a
lot safer than they used to be.

ICE car fires have gone down from 450,000 in the 80s, to
175,000 now. That’s a very good improvement. Still...

Oh I thing 476 vehicle fires do carry weight.

Here’s a situation where EVs are having an issue, on a
couple of days.

The ICE cars have 476 vehicle fires every day.
