"But whether the Command "Thou shalt not murder" really be one thing, or another, this much is certain --- that it has either authorized murder, or has been powerless to prevent it. In either case, it is unfit to exist.

The Constitution by itself is words on paper, as effective as the childhood scribble of mine that I found among my mother's effects after she died.
The People (videlicet "WE") whose business it is to uphold it, and see to it that it is upheld, are its power.
When WE become ignorant, negligent, or resistant to our responsibility, it is WE who are unfit to exist as a free people.

protect,
defend,
attack,
criticize,
deride,
hold in contempt, or
defile it.
