Colorado police release video of police car with suspect inside hit by a train
CNN ^ | 09/24/2022 | Andy Rose,

The newly released video of the September 16 incident shows Rios-Gonzalez – a suspect in a road rage case – asking why she was pulled over as she is handcuffed and put into a cruiser which was parked on railroad tracks.

Rios-Gonzalez is left in the vehicle alone as officers search her truck. Minutes later, a train horn is heard and officers express alarm as the train barrels into the cruiser, crumpling the side and pushing it dozens of feet into a field. Officers can be heard on the video calling for medical assistance.

The vehicle that was hit was a cruiser from the Platteville Police Department, which was assisting with the traffic stop. Platteville Police Chief Carl Dwyer said the officer who parked on the railroad tracks has been placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation by the CBI.

Fort Lupton police say the case they were pursuing against Rios-Gonzalez has been referred to the Weld County District Attorney, but no charges had been filed as of Friday evening.

After watching the video, I was sure she had been killed.

Paul Wilkinson, a personal injury attorney representing the woman, said she is awake and able to have a conversation but remains in the hospital.

“She has a broken arm that she has had surgery on, nine broken ribs, a fractured sternum, broken teeth, injuries to her leg, back and head,” Wilkinson said.

It is a miracle the young woman was not killed. The officer who parked their car on a railroad crossing acted in such a negligent way that they should never work as a police officer again, and probably should not even have a driver’s license.

I bet the academy didn’t cover the “car on the tracks” scenario.

They’ll have to add that as their Kobayashi Maru test.

In Calgary, we have ‘light rail transit’ known as the ‘C-Train’. Two lines run both directions through the downtown core along 7the Avenue SE/SW, a road dedicated to C-Train and bus traffic only. Through the core, it runs at ground level.

As the NW train leaves the downtown, heading across the Bow River and into the NW quadrant of the city, it crosses a number of avenues, the last it crosses being 4th Ave SW. 4th Avenue SW feeds part of its traffic northbound onto 10th St. SW and a bridge across the Bow River. Traffic lights regulate traffic at all intersections the C-Train crosses.

At least 3 or 4 times a year, a driver will fail at trying to run a red light from 4th Ave SW onto the 10th Street bridge. For some reason, the ‘C-Train’ always wins. Perhaps it has something to do with a 3,500 lb. car interacting with a 150-200 ton LRT set. The tow truck business in Calgary is very lucrative!

We also get 5-6 people annually who, while often wearing headphones, cross in front of a C-Train. Not usually a positive outcome for the pedestrian. I feel sorry for the C-Train drivers.

It’s hard to believe that anybody living in a small town with railroad tracks needs to be told “don’t park on the tracks”. I guess that’s why there needs to be so many warning signs and labels.

Just why was the cop car stopped on the tracks ? Why did they put a suspect in that cop car ? There can’t be a good answer to those questions.

Apparently it stopped there because the suspect stopped just on the other side and the officer pulled up right behind her (on the tracks)

VINNY Does that freight train come through at five a.m. every
morning?
CLERK No sir. It’s very unusual.

The next morning, Vinny is at the Reception Desk.

VINNY You told me, only yesterday, that the train hardly ever comes through at five a.m.
CLERK (puzzled) I know, she’s been late two nights
in a row. She’s supposed to come through at ten after four.

Platteville is a tiny town with no money. The settlement costs will probably bankrupt them.

Any municipal government with any sense at all carries a huge liability insurance policy, just in case of stupidities such as this one. I'd prosecute the he77 out of the guy anyway. Road rage is no joke. Physically, killing people is very easy, particularly at highway speed & a lot of people are packing heat these days as well. It's the moral & intellectual barriers that are difficult to overcome & the word "rage" covers that.

The young woman who was arrested for an alleged road rage incident would not have been disfigured and crippled for life with painful injuries had she been convicted of a crime. Maybe a suspended sentence and a few years of probation at most.

Locking her in a car in front of an oncoming train seems a bit harsh. Sort of like a really bad movie.

And just possibly, she was not actually guilty of a crime. We supposedly have courts, judges, and juries to sort out these things, along with "rules of evidence" and "due process". Well, it's a nice thought anyway.

That guy who locked her in the car should go to jail as a lesson to police officers: "Don't be -that guy-".

This cop should not only be fired immediately, he should be prosecuted for reckless endangerment and locked up.
