No loss of muscle mass, but metabolic indications all improved, just by reducing protein to 0.8 grams per kilogram (.364 grams per pound) of weight, but otherwise eating additional calories to make up for the lost calories from the protein reduction.

I’ve been watching Dr. Berry videos on Carnivore. They went the other way, high protein high fat, no vegetables. And they look pretty lean and healthy after years of that.

If protein restriction causes activation of autophagy at the end of periods between meals (for example before breakfast), then it works to clear out damaged cell components and damaged cells.
