About those EV home charging systems...
self ^ | Sept. 21, 2022 | self

I've been musing re home EV charging. I have no expertise beyond common sense but there will surely be practical considerations involved...

Let's say we have a surburban family with mom, pop & children all driving EVs. How many can be charged at once? I am thinking a multi-EV charging system and the necessary electrical capacity to safely power it would both need to be heavy-duty and therefore quite expensive. ka-ching and then you get to pay the electric bill!

If this home only has a minimum power charging system requiring hours to charge a single vehicle, there would be EVs on that charger constantly - and squabbles about "I'M next!" Btw, the insurance companies will note these systems and surely raise their rates accordingly.

Scenario 2: Same residential home but Mom & Pop are travelling for a week. I can envision Junior or Miss Cutie Pie telling their friends "Sure, come on over! My parents are gone for the week, you can use our charger all you want." More ka-ching on the power bill.

On a concurrent note, I've read speculative posts on how once a residential neighborhood reaches sufficient EV saturation, the electrical distribution serving them will necessarily need to be strengthened to handle all the extra required capacity. Someone must pay up for these modifications.

Please join me in celebration. I broke my own personal best. For 20 years I have never been able to break through the triple post barrier. I have just achieved my first quad-post.

It’s much more efficient in the camps. Their ideological predecessors in certain countries paved the way middle of last century.

I’m not one of your Starbucks “right kind of people.” But this could be a business model. Go for it.

I predict that states will require EV home charging permits (for a nominal fee) for each vehicle scheduling your allowable charging periods. For an fee you can get additional allowances.

I put in a 50amp circuit and a level 2 charger for a little over $1000 back in 2021. We have a plug-in hybrid which has a much smaller battery than a fully electric vehicle. It takes about 2 hours to charge fully, and I get 31 miles on electric before the gas engine takes over.

Since most of our in city appointments are completed within 31 miles, it’s easy to run errands, attend appointments, etc. and keep the battery charged between them if I have to return home.

The gas engine kicks in if we need it so there’s no range anxiety, and it doesn’t have to operating where it’s not as efficient — in slower stop-and-go city/suburban driving.

The company I bought my unit from (Grizzl-E) does sell a unit with two charging connectors. It will use up to the recommend amp rating of the circuit but will split the load if two vehicles are connected.

Personally I like the plug-in hybrid vehicles. You get the best of both worlds — electric for slower in town driving and gas for long trips. Plus charging time is much quicker due to the smaller batteries.

Too bad the industry isn’t moving in that direction as you could build 2-4 plug-in hybrids for the battery requirements of a single fully electric vehicle.

I’m sure we’ll have bar codes tattooed upon us, rather than simple numbers like in the last century.

I think "should" is the operative word here.

But it'll be like anything else, you'll get the service and the components you pay for...some will be scammers, so beware.

The real worry is "Sure, by brother-in-law can put that in for ya, no problem." Then something overheats or shorts out and your house burns...maybe with you in it.

have to assume that ONE charger is going to be A LOT of power and current. Two? at the same time. Would that require some serious wiring upgrades?

Now multiply that by the number of homes in your neighborhood and there is no way the current grid could come close to handling that.

I’m more in favor of the whole “regain control of our government” approach. This whole debate is really about our government shoving an inferior technology down our throats at gunpoint, in order to exert more control over us. (Or just kill us.) A certain aquatic reptile will wax ecstatic over that inferior technology, for reasons only he knows ... it’s still inferior.

“Hell one charge may get you 500 miles.“

In your dreams. A second hook up, right. Switch after 6 hours right, the 240 home one takes 18 hours per car and if there are 3 cars? Drive down any street and count the cars per house.

there is no way the current grid could come close to handling that.

And that's the point. Our would-be masters in the self-appointed Ruling Class don't want us driving electric cars. They don't want us driving at all. They want us jammed into high-density urban squalor, owning nothing and being miserable. That's if they don't just jump to the "kill the peons" step.

I quite agree on hybrids being the smart choice. But they still may need to use gasoline. Oh, the HORROR!

My cousin has an old Prius hybrid he bought used. He had to replace the battery pack with a refurbished one for $1300. The replacement one crapped out within days and was replaced for free. AFAIK, this one is still functioning. He did buy battery insurance for 30-something a month, so there's that. He drives hundreds of miles a week and it is quite economical.

Let’s say your EV(s) have 100 kilowatt hours of capacity that needs to be recharged each day.

If you can average a good 5 hours a day of direct full power sunlight shining at
the right angle upon FIFTY 400 watt solar panels, you can manage it.

Ouch.

I used industrial grade connectors and components...would have been less money if I used regular stuff, but for high-current applications like this it’s best to use the good gear.

Ouch indeed! 50 panels, wow.

Time to mow grass with my GAS POWERED John Deere. I do have a 40V 16-inch trim mower that works well.

Doubt seriously that the breakers or $2 a foot wire will constitute the major part of the multi thousand dollar upgrade ... labor!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Markets adjust with lower rates 9PM to 9AM. No surge”

For my provider it is 8PM to 8AM. But if demand remains high until 10Pm or later, I’m sure contracts would be adjusted over time to account for that. The surge would not go away in any event, just cheaper cost for later time periods.
