Three people were killed during an off-roading tour of Colorado’s San Juan Mountains when their Jeep plunged over a cliff on Monday...

Arizona tourists Diana Robles, 28, Ofelia Figueroa-Perez, 60, and hired driver Don Fehd, 72, were all killed when their 2022 Jeep Gladiator drifted off the edge of Ouray County Road 361 and landed hundreds of feet below...

The vehicle first fell 100 feet to the bottom of a cliff... It then rolled about 140 feet down a rocky embankment, ejecting Fehd...

...

Before the crash, Robles, a Yuma nurse, had reportedly just snapped a picture of the iconic Imogene Pass, a “thrilling” trail that is the second-highest drivable pass in Colorado

...

Monday’s accident marked the second deadly crash in the area in just a week. On Sept. 5, an Arizona man was killed and his wife was injured when their ATV rolled hundreds of feet near Imogene Pass

I have been up and down the Moki Dugway several times. I once met a UPS van coming up and I was on the outside going down making it a scary few seconds.

I thought that might be the case, your source might have mislabelled it. I was just there on Google earth and the only switchbacks in that area are what they call Black Bear Pass “Steps” just below Black Bear Pass on a different road south of the Imogene road.

Just noted the extreme switchbacks as unique and they stood out when looking at the area. Looks like a much tougher road than Imogene for sure.

Yep, most dirt passes are closed in the winter.

A paved pass closed for the winter is Independence Pass that crosses from Leadville to Aspen. The east side of the pass is no big deal. On the west side though, several miles at the top are notched into the side of a cliff. It's about 1 3/4 lanes wide and the cliff overhangs the road forming a roof. The pass is generally closed by snow and ice from about early to mid October thru early July.

North of Fairplay is Cinnamon Pass. Like Weston Pass, Cinnamon also drops down on it's west side into Leadville area. I've called the Forest Service several times in summers and always was advised to avoid the pass because of ice. I think a mule would work better than a 4wd.

Cinnamon Pass was the old postal route between Leadville and Fairplay. A postman and a couple of mules. IIRC, a number of the silver and lead mines were on the route, especially on the Leadville side.

Next time you're in Leadville, there's an old saloon there that Doc Holiday is reputed to have shot someone in a poker game. Belly up to the bar for a beer or whiskey. If a person were to order a foofoo drink with a little umbrella, I am fairly certain a ghost would haunt the person right out of town.

I saw all I needed to see on the drives I made on the Moki Dugway in Utah. To her credit, my wife took it in stride, though she’s not usually in favor of such excursions.

First time I drove the Moki Dugway, a Darwin Award aspirant from California was passing a car from the other direction. I certainly did not have a need for speed on the Dugway.

I was on a similar trail in the San Juans and was a passenger in a Jeep. It came a downpour and water was rushing off the mountain, across the road. I got out to check it out, and had we went over at that particular spot, we would be surfing down a huge drop on a waterfall. I refused to do it, and walked across the water rushing across the road. My friend, however, drove across it.

I’ve been on the Grand Corniche in France. There is no road like it in the US. Here we have laws, there they have faith.

A situation like that is where a person has to think for themselves. Never mind what looks easy for somebody else.
You did the right thing.
