Boosting physical activity levels and curbing sitting time are highly likely to lower breast cancer risk, finds research designed to strengthen proof of causation.
The findings were generally consistent across all types and stages of the disease, reveals the Mendelian randomization study, prompting the researchers to recommend a stronger focus on exercise as a way of warding off breast cancer.
Mendelian randomization is a technique that uses genetic variants as proxies for a particular risk factor—in this case lifelong physical activity levels/sedentary behavior—to obtain genetic evidence in support of a causal relationship.
Observational studies show that physical inactivity and sedentary behavior are linked to higher breast cancer risk, but proving they cause breast cancer is another matter.
The researchers therefore used Mendelian randomization to assess whether lifelong physical activity and sitting time might be causally related to breast cancer risk in general, and specifically to different types of tumor.
Analysis of the data showed that a higher overall level of genetically predicted physical activity was associated with a 41% lower risk of invasive breast cancer, and this was largely irrespective of menopausal status, tumor type, stage, or grade.
Similarly, genetically predicted vigorous physical activity on 3 or more days of the week was associated with a 38% lower risk of breast cancer, compared with no self-reported vigorous activity. These findings were consistent across most of the case groups.
Finally, a greater level of genetically predicted sitting time was associated with a 104% higher risk of triple negative breast cancer. These findings were consistent across hormone-negative tumor types.
There are plausible biological explanations for their findings, say the researchers, who point to a reasonable body of evidence indicating numerous causal pathways between physical activity and breast cancer risk, such as overweight/obesity, disordered metabolism, sex hormones, and inflammation.

Regular exercise has many benefits. It can even reduce chance of getting cancer. Best benefit is looking younger and prettier lol.
Good to know as a male......
I resemble that remark. I get these urges to exercise now and then so I just lay down and nap until that feeling passes.
Just don’t get into the habit of jogging alone in your neighborhood at 4.30 AM, unless you are fully prepared for what may or may not happen. Sometimes, ‘nightime’, is not the right time.
Most epidemiological studies have found that higher night work intensity (number hours or night shifts per day/week/month) is associated with a higher risk of breast cancer [13,14,15,16]. The next characteristic of night shift work that may affect breast cancer risk may be the number of consecutive night shifts.
How the Intensity of Night Shift Work Affects Breast Cancer Risk/a>
There are very few health problems that exercise does not reduce the risk of. I just hope my joints can keep up as I get older.
“Best benefit is looking younger and prettier lol.”
Looking pretty is better than not getting cancer? Typical entropy post: Shallow and superficial lol.
“Good to know as a male...”
There was a man in my breast cancer support group. It’s not common, but men do get breast cancer.
That’s really interesting. Thanks for posting.
Keep
Not looking pretty might have been your problem.
That is exactly my experience. In my mid-50’s I was border line diabetic, had high blood pressure, racing heart in mornings, panic attacks in closed malls, fainting spells at work, hip joint pain, lack of energy, chest pains after eating a good meal, etc. I gradually built up my exercise to walking 30 miles at Orchard Hills gold course playing 5 rounds of 18 every week. After a year of this, all my health issues miraculously disappeared, even the hip joint pain was gone. Now at age 82, I no longer belong to a private golf club, but am doing gym routine of treadmill and light weight lifting 5 times a week. Still have zero health issues, knock on wood. Regular exercise beats all medicines, all nutritional supplements, by a mile, in my opinion.
(after all, I don't have to look at myself)
I have been compared to Marlo Thomas and Stephanie Powers. Not pretty. Right.
That is very astute thinking. I will borrow that line of thinking.
I was told I look like Jeff Chandler. That won me no prizes or monetary rewards. OK so I dated a lot of women during my bachelor days in Chicago, big deal. I thank God every day for the generous gift of a good brain and very high level of common sense. That is the only reason a poor immigrant like me is living the American dream. Not only I was never laid off in 40 years of working in jobs in Chicago area, every time I gave 2 weeks notice, the company would give me a big raise and beg me to stay.
