Annie Leibovitz accused of racism after legendary photographer is accused of repeatedly failing to light black female subjects 'properly' after dim Vogue portrait of SCOTUS Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz has found herself in a racism row with critics of her dimly lit Vogue portrait of Ketanji Brown Jackson claiming it demonstrates her repeated failure to light black stars 'properly'. Leibovitz proudly shared her two photos of the Supreme Court justice on Twitter this week after they were published on Vogue's website.

"Racism" has been tranformed into the all purpose political attack word. In practice, it means whatever the attacker wants it to mean, if they can convince a few leftist the attack promotes "woke" culture.

`When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.' `The question is,' said Alice, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.' `The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, `which is to be master -- that's all.'

I thought the color composition in the picture was attractive. A brighter lipstick shade might have helped. Lupita is the gold standard.

"Like when Michelle Obama allegedly had a shopper ask her if she could reach the top shelf for detergent, thinking she was a sales clerk."
I'm fairly tall, over six feet. I have had ladies ask me to take something off an upper self in a supermarket for them. I did it as a courtesy. It never occurred to me that they thought I worked there.

For one thing, she is back lit, which doesn’t help.

Another is that he dark brown suit does NOTHING to add to the picture. Who thinks wearing clothing the same color as your skin tone is a good idea for a flattering picture?

For truly evil people like her, hell’s firelight is the only lighting that enhances the visage of one of the devil’s disciples appropriately...

If they made her look lighter, they’d be accused of racism for making her look less black.

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

just looks like one big mass of brown and black.

Unless you know what you are doing, that's exactly what it looks like. A long time ago I posted a black woman's photo to a website, and her face was more or less missing, even after I edited the hell out of the image to increase the contrast between her facial features.

I'm STILL embarrassed by that photo.

Sorry lady. I tried.

People, please. 27 times that “black” was used in this thread. That should be “Black”. The one reference to Black Lab doesn’t count.

7 times that “white” was used, no capital W’s need apply.

She’s probably the most well known living portrait photographer. Vogue wanted her take and there’s nothing wrong with the photo. They critics don’t like the style. Too bad. I’m trying to recall if she’s the one with the Lewinsky view cover photo of Bill Clinton.

Hmmm...
Looking at the picture at the link, I could swear, if you listen closely, you can hear drums in the background...

Leibovitz is well known for using a single key light, sometimes slightly accentuating a natural light.

in my somewhat limited experience, black subjects prefer to have significantly lighter-than-natural skin tones. It is unknown to me if this preference reflects an ingrained subculture in which mulatto blacks are held in higher social regard than dark-skinned blacks, but for whatever reasons the preference does seem imho to be well entrenched. sometimes the subject will mention it explicitly in enough time to fix it, if there is an opportunity to seek and obtain a private preview. vogue model policy may or may not permit private previews. if the model receives previews, and is able to influence the photo editing process, then the responsibility for the final product is shared between the photographer and the model (and a photo editor, if the editor is someone other than the photographer).

sometimes nothing but a re-shoot can fix outstanding problems noticed at the editing stage. a re-shoot can be twice as expensive as the original shoot, so do overs are not common in the real world, and sometimes there are additional publication based timing constraints. Therefore, sometimes one is simply stuck with the composition as originally envisioned. photographers and/or stylists sometimes interact with the subject to help select clothes that appear flattering in photo compositions. if there is no such interaction, it may reflect a desire of the photographer to capture a subject in a more honest (”natural”) appearance (this might have been what Liebovitz was trying to do, and it just did not turn out well, and there was no chance for a do over).

It’s flatly lighted. The outfit is emphasizing that she’s a black woman on SCOTUS. It’s a historical commentary and political statement. It’s not a glamour shot. The memorial faces East so that’s a new day in the background.

Pretty sure any blacks saying this would personally have zero clue on how to properly, professionally light, black people, much less take a decent photo of anyone or anything.
