The Ford Motor Co. plan was to use its installed base of millions of gasoline-powered F-150s as a large pool of potential buyers for its electric F-150 Lightning. The Lightning was competitively priced, which means it had another advantage. Some of the support of Ford’s share price was based on this strategy, as the leading edge of the transformation of the company into an electric vehicle (EV) powerhouse. Sharp increases in the price of the Lightning may undermine those plans.
Ford’s public relations executives like to bury bad news in their press releases. A prime example is the latest one, which yells, “FORD F-150 LIGHTNING STANDARD RANGE INCREASED TO EPA-ESTIMATED 240 MILES; INDUSTRY-FIRST PRO TRAILER HITCH ASSIST NOW AVAILABLE; ORDER BANKS RE-OPEN WITH UPDATED PRICING.” The practice is embarrassing. The important part of the news was that the price of the pickup would rise by thousands of dollars because of component costs.

To be fair, the top of the line gasoline trucks were that pricey already.

20/20 hindsight is wonderful. I had a 1973 Old Omega with an inline 6, 3-in-the-tree manual shift. Manual brakes and steering. Dirt simple and reliable. Easy to tune. I still have my timing light. I would buy another if I could find one. Minimal air pollution control devices.
“ And a King Ranch leather Platinum was really high dollar.”
Truth.
Makes it useless as a truck.
I've seen a few of those in town :-). The other one is "Nice truck, sorry about your p****".
The new Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz seem like good choices for suburban homeowners.
> For totally screwed the pooch on the new Ford Rangers. They are basically older F1 50s size wise. <
I totally agree. I missed the boat by not buying one of the old Ford Rangers. So I was really excited to hear that Ford was bringing it back. Then it came back looking like a F150. No thanks.
But wait. Somebody at Ford must have got the message. Their new Ford Maverick looks like it might fit the bill. It’s a small truck, and it’s reasonably priced. But I’ve heard it’s got some teething problems. We shall see.
In the real world, this is a niche product, not one for the whole of the truck owning population.
I have owned a Ford Mach e EV for a year now. Excellent commuter car, fun to drive, I charge cheaply at home. So far my only maintenance is rotating the tires. 3 year Ford Option financing, not sure I’ll keep it past that. Might. Now here’s the reality:
If you tow with that F150 it better be a short drive. If you live where it gets cold cut that drive in half. Remember the commercial where the F150 owner plugs his truck into his house to power the house in a blackout? Better keep that REALLY short, in the minutes, or you’ll risk “bricking” your battery.
If you own a business that does light duty local deliveries it might make sense. Forget long hauls.
“FORD F-150 LIGHTNING STANDARD RANGE INCREASED TO EPA-ESTIMATED 240 MILES”
For a full size truck this is crap. And how far do you get when towing? Or with a full bed? Far enough to get to the next charger? With recharging stops it would take you days to go a 600 miles on a road trip.
Somewhere on you tube there is a video where someone took one of these trucks and hooked a trailer to it and headed down the highway. I believe the result was that it went less than 100 miles. The numbers that EV makers throw out are all based on unrealistic conditions.
I read if you want to tow something don’t expect more than 100 mile range.
They need to fire some people.
Why would you fire people who are savvy enough to get idiots to part with almost $100,000 for a pickup truck? I think they're geniuses who deserve a bonus.
Hahaha.
Compensating for something?
Like the guys who put the 6” diameter tips on their 2” diameter exhausts.
Towing range of 80 miles. Ford is out of their mind.
“Gee, I know, let’s kill the most successful brand in the history of trucks. We did it with Mustang and Focus. Let’s kill the F-150 too. Shareholders will LOVE IT!”
i thought that was to dunk a flaming tesla
maybe it does double duty
Marketing folks love to think their product is a Veblen good (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good).
99.9% of them are wrong.
“Everybody out of the pool! Incoming!!”
Lightning trailer range 11 miles
Yup :-)
That's insane.
