With limited funds for firearms purchase, what are thoughts about home defense shotgun v. SHTF AR or other style rifle? Which would be your priority?
Yeah, I kind of misread the post.
IF it’s just to fill a “home defense only” gap, I’m definitely a big fan of shotguns. With pistol grips, and 18-1/2” barrels, for maneuverability. And a light on the end, with palm pressure switch, to activate only when you want. The light beam primary focus circle should be about the size of the pattern.
If you can handle it, a 12 gauge pump like the Mossberg 500 with pistol grip.
For women and elderly, same gun in .410(!). Why? Super easy to handle, rack, swing from the hip and fire, practically no kick, and IIRC, the .410 00 buck has about the same enrgy as a .44 magnum. Which is plenty for in the house.
But for the 12, #4 is better indoors, imo. And BB shot—just a bit smaller than #4 buck—can be bought for 50 cents per in bulk. Sometimes less. That’s good enough for indoors, as well, from a 12 gauge. Lots less kick than 00, but will still remove limbs at in-the-house range.
Practice shoooting it from the hip. Pistol grip that is. Super easy and fast, hard for the bad guy to grab. I tend to shoot a bit low like that. Oops.
Hehee.
There are many ‘Rules of Three.”
I think you know them
For example...
You can live without air for 3 minutes
You can live without water for 3 days
You can live without food for 3 weeks
5.56mm
Buy a Mossbrg 500 or a Remington 870. Purchase a 18 inch barrel for home defense… they do not cost much. Now you have a sporting shotgun and a self defense shotgun. The barrels are very very easy to swap. Go 12 gauge because it is easier to find ammo.
I use a bando sling that holds 10. Butt sock holds 5, 5 in the tube. Focused light that approximately matches spread. Light it up, pull trigger, cycle...repeat.
See post #38 for link.
I'm referring to defensive expectations, not cautions on offense.
Wood and sheet rock is concealment NOT cover.
Well, with that in mind I’d opt for the shotgun my own self as a social weapon, to answer the question posed by the OP.
Uh, that is if I believed in citizens owning weapons, which I don’t. Only important people should have the right to own firearms.
I believe all firearms should be outlawed and confiscated by the military, with help from international volunteer peacekeepers until the scourge of gun violence is gone from American life.
How’s that?
Well,,,
Is that TOTAL SURRENDER?
Ah, yes, agreed. Different question.
I remember many years ago talking to Louis Awerbuck who, characteristically observed “it all depends on if you like your neighbors “ when considering downrange over penetration risks.
But yeah, an interior framed partition isn’t cover.
I’d add a .22 rifle. Maybe a pistol, as well.
Consider a magazine extension for the 870.
My Weapon of choice is .22 and I may take a few out for some Range time today.
Now that you have 110 replies, a solution as clear as mud, a range of suggestions from elephant to mosquito weapons, and a whole bunch of personal bias, pm me and we can sort it out.
I can think of two self-defense shootings with .22s Both were with rifles, and both resulted in the quick death of the perp. One of the perps was a very large young man. Not fat, just very large and imposing. He was hit in the sternum. The cops took the rifle, and they came back and said “This isn’t the gun he was shot with.” The shooter switched guns because he’d shot the guy with an old gun that had sentimental value, and he didn’t want to lose it.
Location is Key !
Both. ‘Pod
Thanks! You saved me a lot of work.
If you can call shooting things work! XD XD
Yeah, that’s what you’d have to do... then just be real careful.
I have been woken up by my phone and been trying to turn off the alarm clock before.
Of course after you had burned through 31 you would likely be at a pretty high state of awareness! XD XD
