Yes onions. This year we found our first ever sweet onion sets at the store. Sweet onions are all we buy so that was nice. Will be nice to see how big they are getting. I eat quite a few green onions too. They have been delicious. Not as hot as the usual variety we buy.
I’ll have to dig out a great recipe on my desktop and post it. Maple onion jam.
That sounds delicious! Please post it when you get the chance.
Todays’s post make me cry! LOL.
Good Morning, Everybody.
(((HUGS)))
The heat is ramped up here (SoCal) and the winds are starting up in the afternoon drying out everything. We are under water restriction, i.e. NO outdoor watering for the next two week - meaning sprinklers, etc., watering by hand is OK.
I am adding a lot more "water wise" plants and have started a cactus garden - but have to have roses!

And, my helpers:
Can also run it through a blender and tweak it into a pepper-onion dressing by adjusting thickness and taste with vinegar/water, maybe oil and adding spices.
It has finally cooled down enough for tomatoes to start ripening. I follow all the local farmer's markets on fb and many of them have had tomatoes right through the 100 degree weather. Could be heat tolerant varieties, use of shade cloth/tunnel, mulch, awesome soil, all of the above.
Hey, they left out two of my favorites — scallions and leeks. And it’s almost impossible to find decent onion rings at the grocery store. End transmission.
Don’t forget pearl onions, cippolini and Egyptian walking onions.
“Maple onion jam.”
I remember Martha Stewart making that on one of her shows but I think there was BACON in there, too! A trifecta of yumminess! :)
P.S. We need to raise a few hogs.
I’m an onion-a-holic .... love ‘em .... raw, fried, baked, grilled ... any which way I can get them. Onions are one of the reasons I’m only 95-98% carnivore.
About “done” with the ‘dog days’ of summer/August. Temps in the mid-high 90’s still, heat index as high as 109 in the state (my specific area generally 100-105). We have had plenty of rain the last 2 weeks from T-storms .... another half inch last night with flash flood warnings.
Harvested my first 4 cukes this past week - Divas. The vines are dying .... Dragon Eggs may be dead before I get any cukes although they are blooming like crazy. Divas, from what I’ve read, are more resistant, but they’re on the way out as well. My SIL & brother have already ripped their vines out ... their cukes are “done”, but I started so late (and from seed), that mine are just coming in. My SIL gave me 4 large, beautiful green bell peppers ... my plants are blooming & have some small peppers, but are having a hard time in the heat despite water ... look fine until the afternoon sun & they they get wilty-looking.
The fire station a mile up the road got a box of Celebrities and 4 quarts of Sungolds .... they were happy & remembered that we’d given them tomatoes last year. I’m glad they enjoy them - a small ‘thank you’ for the help we’ve been given such as twice fighting fires (with stuff exploding) at the junk hole property next door & medical calls for dad. They’re also the ones that took me to the ER when I broke my knee this spring.
All is wet & soggy this morning - grass needs mowing again - not making it a week & it’s too high. If it’s not dry enough by this afternoon, I’ll have to do it tomorrow.
When I do, I plant onions for my wife. I only like them well caramelized.
Somewhat related only, just ordered a propagation tent and related supplies in a first effort since I can’t seem to find time to build a greenhouse. The shop is heated and cooled all the time and has space and two big windows so I may as well take advantage of that. I am anxious to see how the project works out. At least one good thing has come of all the marajuana growing and that is new stuff available for growing legitimate plants.
I also plan to build a grow out cart that will hold 24 flats.
My first effort in the tent will be to jump start the Fall garden that I and my late Dad gave up on since starting stuff from seed in the broiling late summer here is all but impossible. This could be an interesting project.
I went ahead and ordered all my seeds for Spring Annuals and probably went overboard. The seed catalog is like a smorgasbord, just too tempting. Having managed to keep even the Impatiens alive through the heat wave and dry I get the fever to build more flower beds. The pond is holding up to provide water but not for the lawn, not necessary. Evaporation in the last many weeks has been up to 1/3 inch a day and watering only uses about 0.04” a day by calculation.
I am about to give up on the in-ground garden and go to raised beds for most of it. I also plan to try cardboard for weed control next year for what I do put in the ground. Too many advantages for raised beds to pass up not the least of which is not having the mud to deal with. Planting this year was delayed by that and the cool Spring.
With the propagation tent I also hope to be able to get sets ready for planting as soon as first frost danger is done. That way the approximately 90 day time to mature for most things will happen before the scorching heat of summer. I’d like to have most of the vegetables done by the first week of July.
I should remind myself to be less aggressive with the Gravely rotary plow in hilling the garden next year. That got a little out of hand. Too high and too steep.
Long post, I’m anxious to see how this next project goes.
I like my pancakes more like crepes but those look good.
Baked onion
Iin a foil wrapper, place one whole sweet onion, butter, salt, pepper
Bake
Eat
Not all zone 6 or 7 are created equally. My roses get blasted in the summer no matter how much water I give them. Those are spectacular.
All they need is constant care to be that pretty.
Looking for a tallish flower that will grow in shade. Sort of like a daylily.
Oh sorry, that’s not an onion question, is it?
I got caught up on the mowing this week after Beau fixed the mower for me. He discovered that he put one of the blades on upside down when last he sharpened them, so for once I was RIGHT about it not mowing properly. He's been fired from my Maintenance Team, LOL! (Not.)
Beau and Emma Jolene have a BIG hunt tonight, and it's going to be worse than miserable. Still in the 80's tonight and foggy and humid. She needs to win this one tonight which will put her one step closer to being a United Kennel Club titled Nite Champion 'coon dog. Once that happens, we'll probably breed her and then sell her children, LOL!
I know I keep saying I'll post garden pix; I'll try to get to it this afternoon when I can't stand the heat out there anymore. ;)
My Grandmother used to make a version of this:
