There is a type of very strong onion that I get in the yard as a volunteer pest and weed. I've spent years trying to eradicated it. This is apparently a problem in my area.

The heat is ramped up here (SoCal) and the winds are starting up in the afternoon drying out everything. We are under water restriction, i.e. NO outdoor watering for the next two week - meaning sprinklers, etc., watering by hand is OK.

I am adding a lot more "water wise" plants and have started a cactus garden - but have to have roses!

When I do, I plant onions for my wife. I only like them well caramelized.

Somewhat related only, just ordered a propagation tent and related supplies in a first effort since I can’t seem to find time to build a greenhouse. The shop is heated and cooled all the time and has space and two big windows so I may as well take advantage of that. I am anxious to see how the project works out. At least one good thing has come of all the marajuana growing and that is new stuff available for growing legitimate plants.

I also plan to build a grow out cart that will hold 24 flats.

My first effort in the tent will be to jump start the Fall garden that I and my late Dad gave up on since starting stuff from seed in the broiling late summer here is all but impossible. This could be an interesting project.

I went ahead and ordered all my seeds for Spring Annuals and probably went overboard. The seed catalog is like a smorgasbord, just too tempting. Having managed to keep even the Impatiens alive through the heat wave and dry I get the fever to build more flower beds. The pond is holding up to provide water but not for the lawn, not necessary. Evaporation in the last many weeks has been up to 1/3 inch a day and watering only uses about 0.04” a day by calculation.

I am about to give up on the in-ground garden and go to raised beds for most of it. I also plan to try cardboard for weed control next year for what I do put in the ground. Too many advantages for raised beds to pass up not the least of which is not having the mud to deal with. Planting this year was delayed by that and the cool Spring.

With the propagation tent I also hope to be able to get sets ready for planting as soon as first frost danger is done. That way the approximately 90 day time to mature for most things will happen before the scorching heat of summer. I’d like to have most of the vegetables done by the first week of July.

I should remind myself to be less aggressive with the Gravely rotary plow in hilling the garden next year. That got a little out of hand. Too high and too steep.

Long post, I’m anxious to see how this next project goes.

I like my pancakes more like crepes but those look good.

Looking for a tallish flower that will grow in shade. Sort of like a daylily.

Has anyone here tried Hy Yield Grass Killer or similar product for weed and grass control in flower beds WITH flowers present?

Why are the multiplier onions so hard to find and expensive?

I raised them years ago and just started them again. Are there various varieties?

They are winter hardy and produce well.

Any suggestions on keeping deer from eating the peaches off a tree that’s too big to put netting on?

I got my garlic all harvested and ended up with a good crop.

I have pulled and am curing about half my onions. They did very well this year.

My potato plants look good. I’ll find out how they did when I harvest them. My tomatoes are coming in so canning is underway. I have some little baby butternut squashes starting to show.

I used the garlic bed and planted some turnips and beets and will be putting the Brussel sprouts in there as well once the heat breaks and we have more rain forecast.

Howdy folks. Hate to spoil the party but in talking things gardening and all just about half an hour ago I was turning off my back yard grill, putting things away when a few feet away from the pinic table a skunk, looked like a young one, maybe three or four pounds came staggering out of the bushes.

Clearly something was wrong with this thing. It could hardly walk straight, kept falling over.

Looked sick. Rabies? Didn't want to have to do what I did, that was bashed it over the end a few times with a shovel until it was dead. I dug about a three foot hole and tossed it in. Should I have called the cops or just forget about it? Just curious. Thanks for any input.

Another hot and humid week has passed us by here in Central Missouri. No rainfall, just heat and humidity. ugh.

Friday evening I cleaned up the summer kitchen so I could get the boat out. Saturday I played hookie from doing chores and took Mrs. Augie and a couple of our friends out for a boat ride on the Gasconade River. It was good to get away for a bit.

Yesterday I paid for my slothful Saturday. I started with the weed whacker in the victory garden at 7:00am. Buzzed off the grass between rows and the fallow space where the garlic and cabbage came out. Then I picked pole beans. It had been three days since I last picked and I came out with half a bushel. Then I picked winter squash. Then I picked the row of roma tomatoes so Mrs. Augie could make a batch of spaghetti sauce.

After all of that fun I sat down in front of the fan and commenced to popping beans. That took quite awhile to get through. I had the half bushel I picked earlier in the day, and another two gallons from the refrigerator that were picked last week. I separated out a gallon or so of smallish pods to make a batch of dilly beans, and popped the rest for canning. I’ll start on that after work today.

Mrs. Augie talked me into doing a late planting of sweet corn so I’ve ordered a sack of Peaches-N-Cream seed from Jung’s. I’m pushing my luck a bit going with a full-season variety this late in the summer, but barring an early freeze it ought to produce a good crop that’s not plagued by ear worms.

One of the baby chestnut trees I planted back in the spring croaked a few days ago. It went from looking green and nice one day to dead dead dead in one day. I’ve been keeping them watered so not really sure why it folded up. I’ll replace it next spring when I plant the next batch of them
