Why 'SNL' could be ending, according to Kenan Thompson amid dwindling views and slashed 2022 cast

Rumors continue to swirl around the demise of one of the few sketch-comedy shows remaining, "Saturday Night Live."

With tanking ratings, a dwindling all-star cast and creator Lorne Michaels' contract expiring imminently, the show might not be "live from New York" for much longer.

In a recent interview with Charlamagne Tha God, the longest tenured cast member of "SNL," Kenan Thompson, alluded to the end being near.

When asked about the rumors the show would be ending, he said, "There could be a lot of validity to that rumor because 50's a good year to stop at."

Thompson is referring to three seasons from now, when Michaels' contract with NBC expires.

The reason for the potential ending of "SNL" could be related to the rating's debacle, with the season 47 premiere recording only 4.9 million total viewers. The season 46 premiere in 2020 raked in over 8.2 million viewers, per a Nielsen report, meaning loss in viewership was just below 50 percent.

It used to be legitimately funny. Now it’s mostly vicious and bitterly partisan, and unreasonably raunchy.

They have blown it.

I used to enjoy SNL back before they became a left wing extremist arm of the DNC.

SNL stopped being funny when Ronald Reagan was elected President.

Most of the cast members from the late 80s became conservatives: Dennis Miller, Jon Lovitz, Victoria Jackson and Rob Schneider. And even Dana Carvey is pretty much in the middle.

SNL stopped being funny as soon as everyone was absolutely sure Francisco Franco was dead

Long ago went woke. When you go woke, your comedy sucks. It’s either extremely perverted or simply mean spirited. There hasn’t been much funny at all from SNL for a long, long time.

SNL is dead because there’s nothing left of our culture to mock.

It became a humorless spectacle long ago, as they pushed their own political agendas into the audiences faces on a regular basis. No bueno.

I don’t believe it.

I have a contract with Universal NBC and we have a studio office on the lot. It’s NOT the ratings...

It’s the advertisers who ALWAYS pay up. They know it’s a lib show, and that’s why they pay up every year like idiots. I’m high up the food chain at Universal so I know they will never

EVER cancel it. Just like CNN’s dismal ratings, who gives a damn. It’s the amount of advertisers who are willing to pay and it’s under the Universal COMCAST umbrella worth billions.

what does a producer (TV or otherwise) actually do?
is 'executive producer' really just short for 'i have some kind of possibly tenuous financial stake in this production'?
