Dozens of coal-fired power plants across the U.S. plan to stop burning coal or to shut down by the end of the decade, the Associated Press reported.
The decision is not driven by climate change concerns but to comply with a new wastewater rule requiring them to clean coal ash and toxic heavy metals from the water before it's dumped back into streams and rivers. The plants had an October deadline to tell state regulators how they plan to comply.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the rule is expected to affect 75 coal-fired power plants across the country. The Sierra Club said at least 26 plants in 14 states said they will stop burning coal, with 21 shutting down and five switching to natural gas.

I wonder which states.
Luckily, we are on a nuclear power station.
I think you can get a 40 pound bag of coal at Tractor Supply for 10 bucks, so this is a better price.
We’ll all be dead of climate chance by then.
When I retired due to the governments destruction of the coal generating industry in 2012 it was common knowledge that China was building and placing on line a new coal burning power plant every ten days . India around every 45 days . They will have cheap , abundant , and reliable energy while we will be gathering cow dung to heat our homes in the winter . Bath House Barry announced his plans to shut down the coal industry and the republicans with few exceptions stood by and watched . Some applauded his brave plan to decimate the USA . By the way , the coal mines are still mining coal and shipping it to China and India . I loved you America and it hurts to watch you die .
When are the states going to get smart and ignore the rules?
They said big wind farms in CA fizzled out when winds died down

When the wind gets really going, they shut down the wind farm.
I drove through one on a very windy day, and expected to see glowing electrical lines, leaking electrons, but was saddened.
Must be due to Science.
If the Chinese ever invade the West they’ll find people living in huts just like discovering the new world all over again ,LOL

When Mao was pandering to Stalin, his people were naked, eating bark and songbirds, and burning their houses to keep warm.
FWIW, we were at around $0.50 / therm in the 90s. In 1990s dollars.
I put in dual fuel (heat pump with a natural gas furnace) system about 10 years ago because of the high price of natural gas.
During Trump, I was wondering about the wisdom of that choice, natural gas was so cheap due to fracking.
Today, I’m thinking a dual fuel system is a good hedge, plus a wood burning stove.
Communists are really good at solving imaginary problems, real ones not so much.

When does this loss of capacity kick in in the form of higher bills and black outs?
Right after the mid-terms.
>>a great big pile of coal
Here’s the biggest power plant in my state. Note the BIG black splotch right in the middle.

Though I do think they’re not using much coal, mostly running on natgas. I’ll have to look into that.
And soon, this won’t be the biggest power plant in the state. When Vogtle units 3 & 4 come online in the next couple years, Vogtle will be the biggest. 4 x nuclear units.
A whole pile of those, or a couple of the tons, plus a coal burning stove, would make for a great prepper opportunity.
“I think you can get a 40 pound bag of coal at Tractor Supply for 10 bucks, so this is a better price.”
In case you’re wondering, that’s roughly the same heating content (~500,000 BTU) as 3.5 gallons of heating oil or diesel, so a good price. But there’s a big range for energy content of coal - depends on the type, so I used the Anthracite value (what they sell at Tractor Supply).

...and some people here think that Putin is our enemy.
Just as the EV fiasco is starting to take off. The Mother of all Train Wrecks is about to occur. If you’re going EV, you going to need two of them. One with an even number license plate and one with an odd number plate.
People need to look securing their heating sources.
I was spot heating with a kerosene heater back in the early 2000s, and doing quite well with it.
Then the Green children in ClownBammy's goobermint mandated low-sulfur diesel/kerosene...
We’ve all seen how dark North Korea is at night. By 2030/2050, I can see just the US coastal elites’ waterfront mansions lit up and the rest of the US being dark.
What’s the price increase on a ton of coal. This was such a great system. These plants were 100-150 miles downriver from an inexhaustible supply of W.Va. coal.
