Ford electrifies law enforcement with F-150 Lightning police edition

A preproduction F-150 Lightning Pro SSV fitted out for police duty

Back in 2016, Ford fitted out a special F-150 truck for serve-and-protect duty as a police service vehicle. Now the company has done something similar with the new all-electric version of the pickup, which has been dubbed the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV.

Ford notes that it has supplied police departments with vehicles for more than 70 years, with its police vehicle lineup actually outselling those supplied by all of its combined competitors.

The latest addition to its lineup, the 2023 F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle (or SSV for short), essentially combines the all-electric version of America's best-selling truck with the latest generation of the special-edition combustion-engine Police Responder mentioned in the opener.

Ford says that in standard battery configuration, the electric drivetrain produces 452 hp (337 kW) along with 775 lb.ft (1,050 Nm) of torque, payload capacity of up to 2,235 lb (1,013 kg) is possible and the e-truck is capable of towing 7,700 lb (~3,490 kg). With an extended battery option cooked in, the horsepower gets a bump to 580 and the towing capability to 10,000 lb.

The driver and passenger seats have steel intrusion plates built into the backs to protect officers from troublesome offenders sitting on the easy-clean vinyl bench in back The driver and passenger seats have steel intrusion plates built into the backs to protect officers from troublesome offenders sitting on the easy-clean vinyl bench in backFord Inside, officers will find a 12-inch digital instrument cluster, plus a 12-inch touchscreen in landscape orientation above the blocky center console. Ford's Co-Pilot360 driver assistance package is included too, which offers such things as auto emergency braking and help with blindspots.

Any mention of the TAXPAYER subsidies to the company and the Union, to pay for these money-makers?

How much ELECTRICITY does it take to charge them up, and what Fossil Fueled generation is supplying the power?

Scam-o-Rama

There was one of those parking in two spaces at Rotary last week, one of which I would have liked to use. I gave him a parking turtle.

"but they only tell you the “in a perfect world” barely-cracked light throttle dyno run mileage. It can be very misleading.”

No. They put them through a scheduled run. Below is the urban cycle. Also, they reduce the dyno results by 30% to make it closer to real world.

“This vehicle does have a purpose, although it’s not law enforcement, “

Does LE need pickups?

“How much ELECTRICITY does it take to charge them up, “

About $20 worth.

About $100 for the gas version.

It should come with a tow package special. An 8 hour shift in winter with all emergency lights flashing at a vehicle pileup or road closure. The tow points should be on all four sides.

“I’m willing to bet that the range is actually probably only 100 miles if you mash the throttle to attempt that 4.0 sec 0-60 time”

Bingo!

And maybe even go into limp mode to cool the damn thing down.

OJ Simpson was the last car chase that topped out at a steady 50-60 where one of these golf karts might have a chance at keeping up for 50 miles or so.

About $20 worth.

About $100 for the gas version.

Including TAX subsidies?

Not even close to accurate........add the initial cost+subsidies to cost-per-mile, then face the payoffs and profits to the climate change reality.

Easily hackable. If this becomes wide spread among departments, you will most certainly hear stories about such cars being taken over and stopped by hackers.

I just had a thought. A car thief could hack a self-driving car and steer it straight to the chop shop without even touching it. In effect, the car steals itself.

But in time they may become patrol vehicles.

With no ICE vehicles in production, they will have no choice. That's why I call for every .gov minion to be forced into an EV, NOW. It's for the planet.

Many are idiots. They actually believe this crap about ‘Global Warming/Climate Change’ and that electric powered vehicles will save us.

I know some of them. They are absolute in their mindset. You cannot change their minds no matter how many ‘facts’ you throw at them. You are a right-wing kook if you don’t believe and behave just as they do.

There is no doubt in my mind they would kill us all if they thought it would save the earth......................
