Rent paid by the govt so no need to investigate?
Wow. Do you have a link?
There are hundreds of people collecting social security automatic deposits who are 110-115-120 years old.
… or the dishes not piling up in the sink.
When we lived in Hong Kong there was a news story about several dozen swanky apartments. The wealthy owners evidently died without any inheritors. In one case the person had died in a traffic accident a couple had bodies in the flats. Bills were paid by accounting firms from investment accounts for years or decades. One flat had been vacant like that for over 40 years.
Sadly many die with nobody to notice.
Actress Yvette Vickers went out the same way here in the US.

This will happen with regularity in the future - kids move away (when there ARE kids), automatic payments of rent, utilities, etc, all contact with family and “friends” via computer.
Not sure about South Africans, but I recall going into an Ethiopian restaurantin the 1990;s, and they did not use plates to hold their food. They mostly used a large flat piece of bread that looked like Pita Bread.
Not even her employer called police when she stopped showing up to work?
When my skeleton is discovered I hope it’s still sitting in front of my computer and that on the screen is a goofy post I had posted to FRiends on FR.

The British police are notably incompetent.
Not at all what they portrayed on tv.
Could happen here to a point. Social Security is deposited automatically to the financial institution and bills are auto withdrawn. Unless bills are causing an overdraft no one would check.
I am surprised that the mail did not pile up.
From the excerpt:
By March 2020, the landlord began taking Seleoane’s rent out of her Universal Credit, monthly payments from the British government.
From the excerpt:
Seleone’s mail continued to pile up, increasingly concerning her neighbors, The Guardian reported.
This is so sad in so many ways

Here is the link to them going through the “abandoned house”. It was difficult to hear their conversation due to their accents. In the comment section they discuss the social workers, etc.
