As the highly infectious BA.5 variant spreads across the US, experts say they're wearing masks outdoors, especially in crowded settings, to protect against contracting COVID-19.

The BA.5 Omicron subvariant appears to better escape the disease-fighting antibodies produced after vaccination or prior infection than other subvariants, which means people are more likely to become infected, irrespective of prior immunity — though vaccines will still stop most from getting sick

I had the original Covid more than two years ago and it hit me very very hard, mostly because I’m old and asthmatic. I could have died. Got this variant a few weeks ago and I spent three days thinking, “Is there something wrong? Maybe I have a big or something.” That was it. So I’m not too worried.

On any given day in Manhattan I see 10-15% of people wearing the nappies outside. The number goes up considerably when you go to Asian or black neighborhoods in the outer boroughs.

Travelled on a major airline yesterday. All the family travelers are back. Very few wore masks and the majority that I saw wearing them were doing so incorrectly. It must cover nose AND mouth to be effective.

Sounds about the expected share of germaphobes in a typical community who have been psychologically conditioned to fear the worst.

Funny thing is most wear the disposable nappy that does not prevent the spread and those that wear the N95 often wear the same mask for days.

I saw my GP yesterday and was forced to wear a mask. My doctor said he’s seeing an uptick in cases and false positive tests the last month or so. All recent cases have minor cold symptoms. He said he hasn’t hospitalized anyone with Covid in months.

Saw mine yesterday and NO ONE was wearing a mask, including reception, initial vitals (BP, pulse OX, etc.) and doctor. Doing lab work today, same except for two patients with masks.

HOWEVER, NM state public health offices require masks for entry.
