Park officials said bison are wild and unpredictable, as recent incidents show.

For the second time in three days, a visitor to Yellowstone National Park has been gored by a bison.

Park officials say a 71-year-old woman from West Chester, Pennsylvania, and her daughter inadvertently approached the bison Wednesday as they were returning to their vehicle at a Yellowstone Lake trailhead.

The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Cody, Wyoming.

The incident remains under investigation.

On Monday, a 34-year-old Colorado man got too close to a bison and was thrown as he grabbed a child. An Ohio woman was gored in May.

Park officials said bison are wild and unpredictable, and visitors should stay more than 25 yards away.

Only commonsense bison laws would have prevented this.

And some 🚫🚫🚫 signs for the bison to read and obey.

A podcast I really enjoy is Tooth & Claw Podcast - one of their episodes was on bison attacks - very interesting & you get good info on how deadly dangerous they can be.

Bison pretty much are tanks on 4 legs ... normal cow fencing/structures are not going to do it for bison.

They should be banned...they’re dark colored, scary and dangerous. Nobody really needs an Assault Bison. </S>

You don’t want to do it in bison territory! Actually, it’s a good story - not exactly what you might think from the title.

We were camping at Ft. Robinson State Park in Northwest Nebraska & I was going for my morning out and back run along the highway. Just about far enough to turn around I spotted a side road which promised a possible change of scenery. Almost immediately, just to my left in a sort of meadow there was a group of a dozen or more bison chewing their cud, some standing, some reclining (the number probably increases every time I tell this story). I was violating the Yellowstone Park ranger spacing guidance, but quickly backed up out of their sight. If anything, they reminded me of a group of contented cows. None of them had made any movement toward me, but things may not have turned out as favorable for me later in the day if they had been grazing there. Another stroke of luck - none followed me back to camp - a situation I had been in with friendly dogs following me home from our in the country here in Illinois a number of times.

They are fenced out here, just like cattle. The important things to remember is to not startle them, keep your distance and stay in your vehicle. We will not hike in the park during July and August where the buffalo can roam. The males rut from July and August. If you find one on your path, up is the best option.

These are huge animals compared to people. I have been to Yellowstone and seen them. You don’t get close to them or do anything to spook them. Have some common sense people.

“That said, the NPS may want to up the distance on the bison warning.”

I just returned from there a few weeks ago, and the published distances are just fine.

This time of year the bison herds have a lot of calves, and the adult bison will give plenty of warning if you get too close by pawing the ground and shaking their heads before they charge.

The problem is the morons who want to “get closer” to get a better picture. These are the same morons who disregard the “STAY ON TRAIL” signs, and step off the boardwalks to get closeups of various features.

“I wonder that since animals seem to be more perceptive about their environment if somethings going on with the super volcano that’s making them behave differently than they normally do.”

No.

It’s because this time of year the herds are traveling with calves.

“...and visitors should stay more than 25 yards away.”

I’m-a gonna stay about 1,500 miles away! ;)

Our neighbors used to raise Buffalo for the meat. It takes 5 YEARS to bring one to maturity/butchering stage. That’s a LOT of grass, hay and water!

Those things were amazingly huge - like looking at a Wooly Mammoth. I always kept a fence and a road between them and me, and I always stayed in the truck, LOL! (”I can see them fine from here, Thanks!”)

Not sure the last 2 GEN can understand either yards or meters... you may need to translate that into feet.. or better yet, the distance from their front door to the next uneducated non-cis’s house.. :P
