Need help posting from documents folder on new computer (vanity)
me | 06/30/2022 | deoetdoctrinae

My old laptop (with Windows 8.1) was showing its' age, so I recently replaced it with a new HP (running Windows 11). I transferred all my pictures, documents, videos etc. via a thumb drive and thought everything would be fine. I was in for an awakening.

I discovered I wasn’t clear on what I was actually copying and pasting. See post 18. Hopefully that makes a bit of sense. If not, I’ll use being old and senile as my excuse, lol.

What a mess. Glad I got away from MS and Windows years ago.

define ‘creations’.

.doc file?
.docx file?
.jpg file?

What program did you use to create them? Microsoft Word?

Are you saying you cannot open the document where you stored the HTML?

Sound like you may need to switch to ‘administrator’ mode.

Both 10 and 11 seem to be quirky on what used to be (pre-10) simple tasks.

Since I am the only one who uses my computers (desktop and laptops), the first think I do in Windows is to turn off that UAC [User Account Control] because it typically won’t let me do much of anything.

Windows is the virus. Good luck with that. Sorry that you finally figured it out.

I'm probably not using the correct terminology for what I do. I too use the IMG SRC tags, as part of creating a variety of the fund-raising posts that I use on the FReepathon. I incorporated that into info that includes the donation link, and then saved those kinds of creations in my documents folder for later repeated use. All I had to do was copy and paste, without recreating the whole thing each time. I can't copy and paste those existing creations anymore. (Hope that makes a little bit of sense.)

Ah, I get what you're saying. Try this: Right click on each one of your text strings and choose "remove hyperlink."

I've run into issues with Word wanting to make HTML actual hotlinks instead of just the text.

I'm doing a horrible job of trying to describe the little babies that I post on the FReepathon thread. Let me see if I can type one out. (I'm leaving out brackets and spaces and such so the HTML won't be auto-detected)

First it would begin with centerahref=https://freerepublic.com/donate/imgsrc=

Then I would insert the graphic next. It would be followed by what's below.

/abrfontsize=2briclickthepic/i/fontSupport Free Republicbr /center>

When all of that is properly assembled, this is what I actually made.

CAN YOU KICK IN A FEW GREENBACKS?

html document

Try opening with notepad. It should open it as a text file wheter it’s html or txt, as in, mydonategraphic.html or mydonategraphic.txt etc or even if it has no file extension as in mydonategraphic

Then you can copy and paste the html code to FR

If it is just text even with html embedded, there is no reason to save as an office file type. Save them as text. You can use notepad ++ if you want context type highlighting or just notepad. Sounds like they are doc extensions.

Yes, not I got it.
You saved all your image code and link code in a document, and whenever you needed them you opened up the document and copied the code, then pasted it into your FR posts.

As others have said, you may be able to get around this by changing your file associations.

If you made those files in plain text then you can open them with Word Pad.

If you originally made those documents in MS Word, then you’ll either have to pay for the Microsoft office Apps, or try to find a free alternative.
Someone here mentioned libre office as an alternative. It comes packaged with many Linux OS’s and I personally hate Libre office. I avoid using MS office in my personal life but I’ve had to use it quite a bit professionally.

If you want to find out if your old docs open up in wordpad, try right-clicking the document and choose “Open With”, then select “Choose another App”, and then selected Word Pad. If it works, then you can get away with associating that file with wordpad. To do that, you would right click the file and choose “Properties”. In the General tab, about 1/3 of the way down, you can click the button “Change” and choose wordpad. Be aware that once you do this, every document with that same extension will try to open with WordPad and some may fail if their formatting was meant for MS Word

I went through this last year.

Your new Windows system does not have an installed, licensed copy of MS Office. Try and reload the old copy from CD/DVD and see if Win 11 will even allow it.

In my case I had to log into my MS Office 365 account and manage the desktops where I have my Office registered to. Good luck if you can’t remember that account name and password.

MS is trying to move all Windows users over to a model where you pay by the month for using their software. They get monthly revenue, you don’t really need to worry too much about upgrades, but you never own any software and pay for it forever.

I would start the move over to Libre Office or Open Office, if you can’t find the old copy of Office or are not allowed to reload it.

Just wait until you get told that you really do not own your Windows 11. It’s coming.

I've been holding off on moving to Windows 11.

I do have a full copy of Office 2016 that I got from an employee offer at work. I had that installed, but I upgraded it to Office 365 for the full OneDrive terabyte of space.

Yes, https://www.libreoffice.org/ should be the solution for deoetdoctrinae. If you want my basic homemade tutorial (written for a Christian interested in making graphic signs) for it then I will upload it. Also change file attributes. May we use all for God and good.
