Australians living in the United States are 'sickened' at Supreme Court's abortion ruling - with some even considering a move back home

Australians living in the United States have been left shocked by the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling - with some even considering a move back Down Under.

The landmark decision had recognised Americans' constitutional right to abortion and legalised it nationwide.

But as of last Friday, federal protection for abortion in the US is removed, meaning the decision of abortion legality is in the hands of the states.

Australians both at home and living in the US shared their reaction to the news.

Freelance writer Sophie Hanson, who moved to New York City in 2019, told Crikey that she was 'sickened'.

'The fact that only six unelected people can make a religious-based ruling that impacts half the country is horrid, dangerous and hypocritical,' she said.

'When a gun has more rights in this country than my uterus, that's pretty messed up.'

While Ms Hanson and her husband have chosen to remain childless, the news has still made her frightened for the future of the country.

She explained that if the government implemented a nationwide abortion ban she'd consider moving back to Australia.

'I am terrified of a future where hardline Christian Republican Mike Pence, who’s right now calling for a national abortion ban, wins the presidency. If he does, that might convince me to move,' she told Crikey.

Digital strategist Michael Chaitow, who also moved to the US in 2019, expressed his view that America was heading 'in the wrong direction' after overturning Roe v. Wade and still persisting with lax gun laws.

He described the US as heading towards a 'less safe, less equal and less healthy society'.

“...with some even considering a move back Down Under.”

Please do, most Aussies I’ve met here love socialism, and when they wax poetic and compare... at that point they should make their lives complete and return.

My SIL moved there, stayed 25 years and for some unknown reason decided to return and burden everyone with her disagreeable self. Bitter ‘ol socialist, chain smokes in the closet, vodka drinker, obsessed with getting laid... argumentative fugly, dried up bitter seahag. Votes commie, and actually subscribes to ACORN.

She doesn’t come around here anymore cuz I don’t put up with her FBS.

Who knew the Aussies were such baby killers?:

Abortion in Australia is legal. It has been fully decriminalised in all jurisdictions, starting with Western Australia in 1998 and lastly in South Australia in 2021. Access to abortion varies between the states and territories: surgical abortions are readily available on request within the first 16 to 24 weeks of pregnancy, although with no limit on gestational term in the Australian Capital Territory. Later term abortions generally require the approval of two doctors, though are heavily restricted in Western Australia after 20 weeks.

Since at least the 1980s, opinion polls have shown a majority of Australians support abortion rights, and that support for abortion is increasing. While anti-abortion violence is rare in Australia, anti-abortion activists have used tactics including "verbal abuse, threats and impeding entry" outside abortion clinics.[1] In response, all jurisdictions have enacted laws prohibiting protesters from harassing visitors and staff within a certain radius of abortion clinics, starting with Tasmania in 2013 and lastly with Western Australia in 2021.

A woman's sexual partner is not required to be notified of an abortion, and Australian courts will not grant injunctions to prevent the procedure, even if the applicant is the putative father of the fetus.[2] No waiting periods are imposed on having an abortion. A minor does not need to notify a parent of a proposed abortion nor is parental consent required, except in Western Australia. While abortions are regulated by the states and territories, the procedure is partially funded under the Federal Government public health scheme, Medicare, or by private healthcare insurers. In the case of "a child capable of being born alive" (usually taken to mean after 28 weeks of pregnancy), a termination may be subject to a separate crime of child destruction in some states and territories.

Fake news. Australia already had the same rules as the USA has now. The individual states determine the abortion rules. The Federal government has no say in these rules.

We as Americans don’t give the slightest crap what they think. They are not citizens. They do not get a vote. If they don’t like it then as we say back home “don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.”

Says the person from the country that forced vaxxes on everyone body and that locked them in hotels if they tested positive.
On a lighter note, looks like Mike Pence has zero chance to win the Presidency now.

“That image never gets old”

Recently I watched Tombstone for the first time and was rather surprised that this actor is Powers Booth, it doesn’t look anything like Powers Booth to me. You know another one that took me by surprise and I had watched this series a number of times was Lonesome Dove, I had no idea that Captain Woodrow F. Call was Tommy Lee Jones - doesn’t even look like Tommy Lee Jones.

I’m just glad Powers Boothe managed a good career after playing Jim Jones. He was almost too good in that role.

Move to one of 28 states where abortion is legal is also an option.

Most Australians see the federal government as the boss. They don’t, without serious remediation, understand that the US was formed in large part to escape a too powerful federal government [monarchy.]

Indeed we formed several states that would unite for defense and commerce - but States are still the bosses even if today’s EPA ruling will have to reinforce it.

Hence Australians [some of my family included] think that the Roe reversal outlawed abortion... see, with their world view of a fedgov boss they don’t understand that it doesn’t outlaw abortion. Of course the Roe reversal only says that the decision belongs to states... that is the decision is up to the people and their State representatives. Odd that they miss this as the same is true in Australia’s states. Each has differing abortion laws.

Notwithstanding a logical explanation, Aussies keep the hell out of US politics.

Baloney. I doubt any care.

Or if they do care, don’t understand the ruling.

Literally all it says is the constitution is silent in the issue, so either Congress or each state has to go deal with it.
