The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
I picked my first ever kale. Actually I gave the row a haircut. Washed, steam cooked it in a fry pan, drained, cut into 4 portions, bagged and frozen. Will try some on a pizza or in soup this fall.
Me too!
Sometimes I accidentally click on an old thread and find comments he posted. I always felt like less of a freak when he was around.
We freepmailed back and forth over various topics and I sent a couple of packages. He was a wealth of knowledge a good man.
Mr. Unhappy Jalapeno perked up within 30 minutes after I put up some row cover shade - I was surprised the “perk” happened so fast. When buying the plants, I was pulling out some that were half hidden under a shelf. Mr. Unhappy was one of those plants & I think it was in shade all the time & not hardened off to sun. The other plant was in the front, so that one is doing just fine.
I want jalapenos for Jalapeno Pepper Jelly. I also found out this morning that a relative just picked buckets of blackberries on her farm yesterday. I’m going to see if I can get a quart to freeze for Blackberry Merlot Jelly batches. She doesn’t eat jelly, but I will give her a couple of jars with her farm name crediting the berries & she can gift them to people who DO eat jelly!
I have LOADS of jalapenos on my plants in East Tennessee already, with many more to come, based on the amount of blossoms...BUT what has me excited are the two Carolina Reaper blossoms that have just opened, and it isn’t even July 1st yet! Blossom ‘buds’ visible on my Death Spirals, but none have opened yet.
Beau said he’s spotted two patches of Black Caps that are starting to turn. We should be picking very soon!
The birds got all of his Haskaps (Honeyberry) while he was fishing in Canada.
What? I was supposed to camp out in the garden and protect them? *SNORT*
I watered The Big Garden so far (came in for some more coffee before I finish the Kitchen Garden) and our apple trees are LOADED, so I’m happy about that. Liberty, Haralson, Bonny Best and two Honeycrisp, which have NEVER produced fruit until this year (8 years in)? How anyone makes money on apples is beyond me. SO much work to do it right!
On a sadder note, woodpeckers have ringed my two pear trees (also producing for the first time!) and my Spring Snow crab apple. Fingers crossed that they can survive the damage. Jerks!
She’s still setting but I’m worried about the nesting box being 4 foot off the ground. That’s a long drop for a baby chick. The boxes have a 1 1/2” lip on the front so that ought to keep them in for a few days. I can add a little height to it and I can easily set the box down lower but don’t want to disturb hen or eggs right now. 20-21 day gestation time and it’s close to being a week. I peek in every day.
Keep us posted!!

Now I just need to get some eggs from the neighbor that are actually fertilized, else she’ll be setting a long time. That was already the plan but that was 2-3 months ago so it slipped my mind until this morning. LOL
