The war on America's suburbs has opened a new front. Buried in President Biden's proposed budget for 2023 is a $10-billion bribe for suburban communities to remove zoning barriers to high-density housing. The federal government promises the suburbs funding for street improvements, traffic control, and water and sewer lines if they adopt "housing-forward policies" that eliminate single-family zoning and open their communities to "affordable housing."
This is no benign endeavor to provide more housing. It is a strong signal to Democrat-controlled states to gear up the decades-long efforts to bludgeon affluent communities into submitting to "housing justice" and providing their "fair share."
The New York metro area has been ground zero for efforts to erode local zoning, and if Democrats retain the governorship and supermajorities in both houses of the Legislature, the pressure will be on New York's officials to enact legislation — first to weaken local zoning and then to destroy it. Their new tools are accessory dwelling units (ADUs), which can be apartments over garages and standalone dwellings, and large multi-family transit-oriented developments (TODs), surrounding train stations and bus depots.
These efforts are being fueled by housing activists and progressive think-tanks like the Brookings Institution, which declared in a January 2022 article: "By some measures, the suburban counties around New York City have some of the worst exclusionary zoning in the nation."
To understand the hostility to the suburbs, some background is useful. The initial strategy was to usurp local control through litigation brought by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). It had limited success because to eviscerate local control, HUD had to prove racial discrimination, which by the 1980s and 1990s had largely been eradicated. So HUD tried other tactics.

Utopia smells like a high-rise housing project in a ghetto.
The typical symptom of this problem is the chronic congestion you see on major highways all over the U.S.
Just wow.
10 billion isn’t building a wall.
I do think we do need to ease land use restrictions to make housing more affordable, although this a local and state issue, not a Federal one. As is, many people are being priced out of the housing market.
Jeez, you’d think the people who’ve been on and on about the coof being so deadly would have a mad-on for multi-family dwellings, legal or otherwise...
But they don’t, do they.
Because these zoning changes aren’t about fairness any more than CoupFlu policy is about protecting public health.
This is about trying to repopulate major metros and infiltrate the burbs with voters loyal to Deep State.
Multiculturism and Diversity at the point of a gun.
On the plus side I will be able to build a high rise apartment on my land next door to all my liberal voting neighbors.
In a general sese wages are going to have to go up by an order of magnitude over the next 10 years or we will have a revolution.
If you refuse to go to the ghetto, they’ll bring the ghetto to you. I am already seeing this in the outskirts of Bethlehem PA, near East Hills Middle School. It used to be a nice neighborhood, then they decided to build an apartment complex that has lured in all the Obama democrats. The result has been predictable with an increase in crime and urban blight. Democrats turn everything into shit!
Just what we need: Judge Dredd-style mega-blocks.
Fiancee and I moved into an apt while we were looking for a new house. The place was very nice, very expensive and turns out 50% ghetto. On juneteenth they had a party at the pool and took up all of the grills so we could not use them and we were told to use some other. They broke some glass beer bottles which are not allowed and now the pool is closed to everyone for the foreseeable future. 100+degrees expected for the next couple of weeks. We found a house and hopefully will be breaking our lease a month early to get out of there. Diversity - looking forward to the new neighborhood.
I used to do electrical distribution design for PPL.
I did not care to go to downtown Allentown or Bethlehem.
Where I was, many didn’t speak English…
Property freedom, travel freedom, education freedom, crime freedom.
Democrat scum despise the freedom that suburbs provide.
“...Democrats Want to Get Rid of the Suburbs...”
They have been working this agenda for a long time, now
They want to flood the suburbs with criminals, gangs, rapists, and murderers.
And prices will go up by the same order of magnitude. The problem comes 100% from DC. first printing money as fast as the presses will run. Second spending it even faster than they’re printing it. And third the Democrats’ war on fossil fuel ie affordable energy. The price of energy affects everything else. As long as Democrats are in charge things will continue to get worse.
No one should be able to escape the stench of the cities - except the politicians of course.
