An Illinois father, who drowned his three children in a bathtub and then placed their bodies in the bedroom of his home, has been charged with murder.

Jason E. Karels, 35, of Chicago, drowned his children one-by-one in the bathtub of his Camden Lane home on Monday after he and his wife Debra recently split up, a prosecutor said at a bond court hearing on Wednesday.

His children - Bryant, 5; Cassidy, 3; and Gideon, 2 - were spending the weekend with their father when their mother, Debra, found their bodies in the bedroom after calling for a welfare check for Karels, who was said had 'severe mental health problems.'

Karels was not on the property when she discovered their children in his home. The pair shared custody of the children, but did not live together.

Inside the home, police found a note written by Karels to Debra, with one line reading: 'If I can't have them, then neither can you,' prosecutors said. Authorities say the killings appear to have been 'motivated from a domestic situation.'

'Unfortunately, there was domestic abuse in their relationship and Debbie was finally getting the strength to leave him and proceed with a divorce,' her sister-in-law Christina Neuman Berg, explained to the Daily Beast.

'Debbie wanted to maintain a relationship with her kids' father and let him visit them, and now we know that was a horrible mistake.'

Preliminary autopsy results showed all three died from drowning, Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton of the Lake County Coroner's Office said.

I once worked with a guy whose wife gave their teen son an overdose of sleeping pills, and then overdosed herself. They both survived, and she claimed she wasn’t trying to kill the boy, so she got off without a prison sentence.

But the kicker is: he didn’t divorce her. They stayed together, and he even brought the wife to a few company parties before we figured out who she was (the case had been in the local news a few years before).

There’s a theory that in general mothers love their kids whether or not they love the father, but fathers are more apt to love their kids a bit more conditionally on whether they love the mother. I’m female (and a mother) so dads feel free to disagree.

In my case, my ex-wife and I had a daughter that I did not see for 18 years. The divorce was bitter, and we certainly had no love between us. When I reunited with my daughter when she was 18, she quickly became a very important part of our family and was deeply loved by all of us until her recent death at the age of 36. COVID. I'm not suggesting the theory is wrong, but I think there are far too many other factors that preclude such a broad conclusion.

As for this story, it truly breaks my heart, having so recently lost a child. Losing three at the beginning of their lives is beyond anything I could imagine.

It’s obvious that we now need to ban bath tubs and establish ‘red flag’ laws to prevent the mentally challenged from acquiring them. We should also have severe restrictions on acquiring multiple water inlet, i.e., faucets, shower heads hand held devices, and most importantly water jets.
