The Saudi-backed LIV Golf tees off, and the PGA Tour quickly suspends 17 players

Even before it started, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series reshaped the careers of several high-profile players, costing golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson their relationships with the PGA Tour and some of their sponsors.

A reprisal had been expected from the PGA Tour — and immediately after the inaugural LIV tournament teed off on Thursday, the PGA issued sanctions against 17 players who defected to the new series.

The players "are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA TOUR tournament play, including the Presidents Cup," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a letter to tour members.

Most of these are older players looking to cash-in at the end of their careers.

There's still good money to be made on the Senior PGA tour which they won't be eligible for.

I wonder if the sponsors of the affected players will be forced to cancel the sponsorships......

By whom? it would be unconstitutional.

Not really. Most of the Majors are in America. Obviously the PGA never schedules things opposite the Majors but it does indicate PGA players can play in non-PGA events in America.

These particular guys maybe not. But who else might join LIV? Petulance is always a bad look. And the PGA is being very petulant. Just this kind of “our way or screw you” could drive other players out.

The senior PGA tour has similar money pools as the LPGA. That is not good money unless you are a grinder like Bernard Langer.

No it wouldn't, the PGA could could simply demand a higher price from the major sponsors and NBC, which has a contract to televise the majority of the PGA tournaments could demand a substantial refund of the payments to the PGA for airing their tournaments. Such contracts are based on projected viewer numbers and if the top players are no longer on the tour, the audience numbers will drop as well revenues.

FWIW, advertising rates for pro sports such as the NFL are based on promised viewership. If the number of viewers drops, such as what has been happening in the NFL, the cost of the advertising goes down as well which results in a loss of advertising revenue to the NFL as well as to the network that airs their games.

And you think the pga tour is clean? There’s the PGA tour china your and the annual pga tour tournament in Shanghai.

The chicoms make the Saudis look like amateurs when it comes to human rights abuses.

They offered Tiger a billion and he turned them down. Good for him.

Yep, I applauded him for that decision. In golf, there are only 4 major tournaments that will never be outdone and to sign on to the Saudi's for immediate financial gratification is a death sentence.

Will the LIV have US televised coverage of their tournaments which NBC currently has the market sealed with their contract with the PGA?

I don't know but it sounds to me like these 17 players and those who follow are giving the finger to the very athletic organization that allowed them to amass their fortunes.......

Hopefully their contracts include free gasoline for the rest of their golfing lives..........

It is good money as long as you have the name and the sponsorships.

Winning tournaments is nothing but a financial trophy to put on the your shelf compared to the financial endorsements you get from the manufacturers you represent simply by wearing their clothes or using their equipment or appearing in their commercials.

Because they DARE to break the PGA monopoly on professional golf.

By forcing the players to choose and thus keeping them out of PGA events they’re just gonna kill their own ratings.

Soon the Masters will be played in Williamsport, PA going head-to-head against the little league world series.

The Masters is not a PGA event. It will always be played at Augusta National.

I’m pretty sure “curses” is a typo, but it is apropos to the situation the PGA is projecting. The Trump Curse remains real.

It’s like when investors built separate baseball leagues. Even then, no players playing in one league were not allowed to play in the other league also. In golf, think of the parallel as if each player is a “team” (a playing unit) in the PGA [league]. Baseball players do not play for two teams in two different leagues.

It's not a great analogy. First of all, golf is an individual event, and the players could always pick and choose which tournaments they played.

Also, when we did have leagues that truly tried to compete for top talent (USFL, WHA, ABA and AFL), the thing that kept the players from going back was the contract with the new league, not actions by the old league. (The conflicting schedules also prevented it.)
