Even before it started, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series reshaped the careers of several high-profile players, costing golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson their relationships with the PGA Tour and some of their sponsors.
A reprisal had been expected from the PGA Tour — and immediately after the inaugural LIV tournament teed off on Thursday, the PGA issued sanctions against 17 players who defected to the new series.
The players "are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA TOUR tournament play, including the Presidents Cup," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a letter to tour members.

Of the 17 golfers, nine had preemptively resigned their PGA Tour membership.
Sounds like a lawsuit coming.
How to ruin your sport
Well, this should kill the only sport I enjoyed watching on TV. I guess it’s a better death that seeing a bunch of sodomites walking down the fairyway holding hands.
why are they suspended?
Isn’t this the tour that’s playing Bedminster later in the summer?
PGA is being really stupid about this. They don’t control the majors, so they have no real punishment. All they’re doing is banning some of the sport’s big names who are doing occasional “other” tournaments to make more money. By forcing the players to choose and thus keeping them out of PGA events they’re just gonna kill their own ratings.
I’m actually quite happy. After the PGA BANNED ALL TRUMP RESORTS for future tourneys, I want the PGA to go down in flames. Besides, DJ is one of my fave golfers aside from Phil M.
More power to LIV.
So we are just going to overlook American human rights abuses, like the J6 and numerous imprisonments and bombings?
For playing in a non PGA tour professional league.
“why are they suspended?”
To send a message to other pga players.....the pga doesn’t want the competition.
Most of these are older players looking to cash-in at the end of their careers. The money is too big to ignore. They aren’t leaving on principle.
I haven't yet gotten all the info to determine what's up here. Imagine you are the top 150th golfer in the world, do you make more than the top 150th NBA player? The #250 golfer this year has earned 534,000. So Poulter and Oosthusian are around there both earning 500,000. Does it make sense for them to take a 20 or 40 million LIV contract?
Playing for a competing golf tour. It's as if an NFL player went and played for a Canadian Football League team. They are, theoretically, competing leagues.
Does the PGA need some competition? Maybe, (I need to learn more) and maybe the LIV has an interesting format. That said, I'll skip the saudi tourneys.
The suspended pros might be wise to do the same.
Especially someone Mickelson who earned a lifetime exemption, why do they care if he plays somewhere else and only plays the majors, at 0+ years old.
Can Mickelson take the hit?
I heard he owes like 7 zillion dollars in gambling debts doesn’t he? Lol
at 50+ years old
Haven't seen the schedule yet, it would be funny if they played at Bedminster and Doral.
Phil does not need money…
“why do they care if he plays somewhere else”
It’s really not about him...it’s about discouraging any other pga players from doing the same.
The way the pga is thinking they don’t want a mass defection.
