JMO, a 76 year old, one hit wonder, should just retire.

Except he wasn’t a one hit wonder.

Far from a one hit wonder. Maybe writing children's books is how he is enjoying his retirement.

I like ‘Vincent’ better than ‘American Pie’.

Ok, a somewhat 2 hit wonder.

I vaguely remember the song "Vincent" about Van Gogh.

Some songs, never could figure out how they could become hits. This one was one of those turn off the radio jobs.

He pulled out of performing at the NRA Convention after the shooting in Uvalde. Clearly, he’s a bog lib!

If you watch the video linked, you would agree with me and he should retire.

Don Mclean is no Paul McCartney.

Ok, a somewhat 2 hit wonder.

According to Billboard, he had two #1 hits, 7 Top Ten Hits, and 10 other songs that charted including one other in the top 20.

“This’ll be the day that I die.”

Such a great theme for a children’s book.

I wonder how many commenters can match such a accomplishment?

It may be hard for the average child of today to relate to that song, unless the focus is mostly on the music and song structure. The lyrics and storyline concern people who have been dead since the middle of last century.

Most kids probably won’t think about it very deeply, they’ll just chant the refain “This will be the day that I die!” with everbody else, politely clap for Mr. McLean when he’s done strumming his acoustic.

Sad about the plane crash, but “the music” did not die that year, but I’d say ‘82 or so. However, American Pie did inspire some clever parodies. “The Day the Nasdaq Died”, “Bye Bye to America Online”. Others?
