In the opening scene when that huge Imperial Star Cruiser appears and takes several seconds to come into full view is when I realized "Holy Smokes, this is new!''.

Of course back then releases weren’t wide. It hit the big markets and then slowly expanded. So it didn’t get to Tucson until mid June. I had seen the commercials and was not impressed. But my uncle in Chicago called to say “you must see this”. Because the Tucson theater had time to prepare for what a massive hit this was they had bought a portable soda fountain and a cart with snacks. Cause back then “big” theaters had 3 screens and this one only had two, which were both showing Star Wars, and you couldn’t buy tickets in advance. So to see Star Wars you showed up, joined the back of a line that wrapped around the building and waited. And waited. And bought concessions from the carts. And waited. And every hour a bunch of people would leave the theater yelling “you’re gonna love it”. Ahh nerd times.

No though I did see Jaws on re-release there. That was actually the first movie I saw in a theater after we moved to Tucson.

Crud the name is escaping me. It was the one across Broadway from Park Mall. Not the Buena Vista that was across Wilmot (where I saw the first 4 Star Trek movies). Trying to google it but being stymied.

In 1975 before I moved to Beautiful Huntington Beach, my ex wife & I saw: Jaws, Shampoo & American Graffti across the street from Park Mall on Broadway & Wilmot

Glad I’m not the only person out there with weird ability to remember where I saw movies.

“It was definitely astounding at that time. “

I was underwhelmed and though it a bit cartoonish. Fun, yes, but a bit goofy.

But then, I had been spoiled by the incredible quality of
“2001 A Space Odyssey”
