Of course back then releases weren’t wide. It hit the big markets and then slowly expanded. So it didn’t get to Tucson until mid June. I had seen the commercials and was not impressed. But my uncle in Chicago called to say “you must see this”. Because the Tucson theater had time to prepare for what a massive hit this was they had bought a portable soda fountain and a cart with snacks. Cause back then “big” theaters had 3 screens and this one only had two, which were both showing Star Wars, and you couldn’t buy tickets in advance. So to see Star Wars you showed up, joined the back of a line that wrapped around the building and waited. And waited. And bought concessions from the carts. And waited. And every hour a bunch of people would leave the theater yelling “you’re gonna love it”. Ahh nerd times.
