Weird Foods People Ate During The 1950s

I liked fruit flavored Jello as a kid for dessert, but can't remember the last time I actually ate Jello.
For the dinner and block parties my mother always made bacon potato salad and stayed away from Jello.
No tunafish or shrimp in jello. ughhh
The gelatin has been a preservative for centuries and only recently has lost favor. May make a comeback as folks again become cave dwellers.

I think jello with fruit encased is good.
“I think jello with fruit encased is good.”
Can be.
My dad went through a spell with no job and we were dirt poor. We got government relief. There was no cheese yet, but there was some kind of meat in a can. I also remember powdered eggs that were disgusting. He was also a hunter and would make spaghetti sauce from the critters he bagged. Squirrel meatballs anyone? Never went hungry though.
Seafood in a spicy is not bad. Salmon/shrimp/tuna steaks.
Salmon eggs mixed with scrambled chicken eggs is good.
You must be older'n Moses!
Regards,
Someone, and I'm not advocating it, should "pie" a leftist with a shrimp lime Jello mold, that would be disgusting.
jello with cut up fruit...bananas, apples, berries, and for extra crunch, minced up celery.
I wouldn’t term it as weird but that lunchmeat that used to have coarse pepper on it ( old fashioned i think they called it) i don’t seam to be able to find anymore.
Go to an Italian grocery to the meat case ask for mortadella :)
I remember those days also, one would ask the butcher for a 1/2 lb of salami and he would cut it, and wrap it in butcher paper.
Around the mid-80's zip-lok bags became popular at deli counters.
Oh what is a modern leftist to think, get his/her/ transgender/binary/mononary person to think?
Do I get my pastrami in plastic or paper?
Spam is maybe what you’re thinking of.
You can take milk, a little butter with potatoes and make potato soup. Add a little salt and pepper, some corn bread or baking powder biscuits and it is good. Rabbit, squirrels, doves, raccoon for meat. Country folks can survive.
As a lovesick teen I would write poems that were never sent. My wife found an envelope with them all one day.
“How come you never wrote ME a poem?”
So I wrote her one.
“Roses are red
Tulips are yellow
I love you more
than mixed-fruit Jello.”
She never asked me to write another one.

She still has that one in her jewelry box 30+ years later though.
:) you da man.
With some miniature marshmallows tossed in for good measure!
I didn’t exist in the ‘50s, but some of this bled into the following two decades.
There was olive loaf too.
LOL.. no government cheese. I was born in the fifties so that should give me away.
It wasn’t Spam. This was a little smaller than a large juice can and was chunks floating in a broth. Pork or beef, not sure. It was tasty.
