The famous 'Washington Crossing the Delaware' painting, which hung in the White House from the 1970s to 2014, is coming up for auction next month, when it is estimated to fetch about $20million.
The 1851 oil painting is one of three versions painted by Emanuel Leutze of the man who was to be the first U.S. president leading troops during a key moment of the American revolution. Only two survive.
The first version was destroyed during a World War Two air raid in Germany, said American Art specialist Paige Kestenman at Christie's New York.
'The second is the monumental work that is the centerpiece of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's American Wing, and the third is this work right here,' said Kestenman.
The version at New York's Met measures 12.4 feet-by-21.25 feet.
The painting up for sale on May 12 is smaller - about 3 feet-by-6 feet. It had hung for decades in the White House, mainly in the West Wing reception room.

Hope Musk or another high roller buys it and puts it back in the White House when Trump is inaugurated...next to Churchill’s bust.
Now that he’s in the Oval Office, it’s 25% for the Big Guy...
That’s what I suspected.🙄
You know we could pay down the national debt by selling a bunch of things America doesn’t really need. We could start with the White House. Wonder what Elon Musk would pay for something like that?
“Yeah. I ‘member that day. No joke. I told ‘im we should take the Peter-built, but George said a big ‘ol noisy truck would ruin the s’prise. He wuz right fer once. Sweartagod.”
Dogs Playing Poker would suit the intellectual level of POTUS Biden.
‘Rare’? I guess so.. I bet there’s only one of them
Or Elvis on black velvet...
And ten percent for the Big Guy!
The Unelected Ron Klein Regime gets rid of more Americana and US history. All part of his strategy to get rid of America entirely.
Not a big deal.
Next, they’ll melt down the Churchill sculpture for its scrap value.
Anything traditional that can’t be explicitly cast as woke must go.
So, you think they’ll have a yard sale?
Not that I live in their ultra-wealthy circles, but I believe many collectors loan artwork to National institutions and private galleries, often on a long term basis.
Operative word: Loan. Not give.
Yard sale? Definite possibility. There’s a lot of portraits of dead old white men in the halls of the White House. Less likely is it would be open to the public.
Would you go?
Joe Biden will next sell the White House and Hunter will be the Real Estate Broker handling the deal.
What?
Just how did an historical painting form the WH become available for sale? No word on that in the article.
Did Obama have a garage sale in 2014?
The current “private owners” no doubt need the $20 mil to pay for security services to protect themselves and their property from the 200,000 per month illegal alien onslaught unleashed upon the U.S. by South American governments foisting their welfare hordes onto the backs of the sucker U.S. taxpayers. The Tequila is flowing heavily as are the Chicas at those parties in every SA capitol celebrating their incredible good fortune and total lack of push-back by the cowardly Gringos.
The owner of the painting is putting it up for auction. Nothing wrong with that.
The government has the option to bid on the painting, or to make an offer to the owner.
This is how the National Gallery acquired the only Leonardo Di Vinci painting in the Western Hemisphere in 1967. They bought it.
