It is fear of Marine Le Pen that will keep Emmanuel Macron in office. It is hope for change that may see him lose.
In yet another example of the push for national sovereignty around the globe that has manifested in the last decade, the French presidential elections are about to run their course. The two-round election was introduced by General Charles De Gaulle as the Fifth Republic was installed in 1958. It will be the 11th such election since then. Americans would do well to pay attention.
The first round enables the populace to vote with their hearts. They can vote for any and every party under the French spring sun. Only the top two are then allowed to feature in the final round.
In so doing, the voter is forced, in a manner of speaking, to vote with his head and give, through the ballot box, the presidency his consent.
De Gaulle was inspired partly by the “first past the post” system. He saw the British political system as guaranteeing continuity and political stability.
The idea was designed to inject these two attributes into France’s political DNA, and thereby move away from the perennial parliamentary instability that plagued the third and fourth republics from 1870 to 1958—with a short collaborationist break between 1940 and 1944.
So, as per the plan, two weeks ago, the French went to the ballot box with their hearts on their sleeves. They had choices aplenty. Twelve parties, many with different names but surprisingly similar policies worded differently, jockeyed for the top political job in France.
From this dirty dozen, Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen rose to the rim.
Out of chaos, order.

What is with so many European countries choosing leftists? It seems that the horrors of past bad decisions have not taught them a lesson. It seems time for the pendulum to swing back toward the right.
MAkeno mistake about it. France is seized with the saame socialist bull crap that America is.
LaPin wants simply to make France for French people. Her approach is to Make France Great Again.
The so called “fear of LePin “ is a cranked up piece of propaganda designed to result in fear. Same dynamic as the continuous media diatribe against President Trump.
Le Pin is twice the man Macron is.
MFGA!
Macron seems to be a perfect fit for a modern France, a Globalist, effeminate, socialist to a fault and a mama’s boy. Loved by the EU, & Washington.
Le Pen is the last thing modern France, the EU or Washington wants, a Nationalist and almost as far left as Macron, but still too far right for the Globalist.
“What is with so many European countries choosing leftists? It seems that the horrors of past bad decisions have not taught them a lesson. “
I worked for an Israeli company that mostly employed American Jews. Despite wherever they might have come from, they considered themselves as European. Being European was more a state of being rather than some actual reality. They believed in free everything. Free education, free healthcare, free food. I can’t think of anything that at some point one of them hadn’t suggested should be free. When you dove down into how anything worked, they’d admit that whatever they wanted wasn’t feasible. One example was how wonderful the free medical care was in Israel. Then, hardly taking a breath, the man said, “Well, of course, if you want it now you pay a little under the table, but that’s beside the point.” They were all registered Democrats and voted by mail whenever they were in Israel. I asked why they’d do that if they weren’t going to be affected by the policies of the Democrats they were helping to elect to office. They considered Americans to be too stupid to vote in their own interests and if they didn’t vote it might result in “reactionary, right wing Republicans” getting elected. They often wrinkled their noses like they were smelling a skunk when they said this.
To answer your question about why Europeans vote for leftists, it’s because leftism is “right” and it has never been done correctly. The right people “them” were never the ones who had the reigns of power. And, everything would be fine if everyone simply was nice to each other. These people all had multiple degrees. They’d often spent significant time in a university environment. Therefore, they understood how “the world” worked so much better than someone who had actually lived in the world. Seriously. That’s their attitude. These aren’t dumb people. These are people who have lived in a sequestered life which can be had even if their neighbors are wage slaves. They just don’t interact with “those” people.
The French have an election DAY and paper ballots. She may just win.
My father often said (this is a sanitized version) “They must be pretty smart to be that damn dumb”.
Good comment.
Re thought everything should be “free”: Remember, socialism, and its big brother communism, will always be popular with those who think they can get something for nothing.
Is it possible that people in socialist rich Euro nations receive more from their governments than our welfare-’rich’ Americans do?
