What is your favorite song that actually tells a story?

Posted on 04/22/2022 3:56:36 PM PDT by Beowulf9

I admit I saw this elsewhere but I thought it might be a good thing to put here because honestly I look and listen to songs people post. I am always entertained and it opens my mind to many different avenues of musical tastes I have not known before. I hope ones like this column.

John Prine, Yes I Guess They Oughta Name a Drink After You

Oh, I get drunk most every night
Seems like all we do is fight
The more I drink
The less I feel blue
Sometimes I feel like an awful fool
Spendin’ my life on an old bar stool
And yes, I guess they oughta name a drink after you

John Prine (again), Far From Me

Well, I started the engine
And I gave it some gas
Cathy was closing her purse
Well, we hadn’t gone far in my beat up old car
And I was prepared for the worst
“Will you still see me tomorrow?”
“No, I got too much to do”
Well, a question ain’t really a question
If you know the answer too

That was a good one. Don’t forget “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves”

and “Dark Lady” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXUH7Wk8-WI

So many 1970’s songs told a story.

The best was “Ode to Billy Joe” (Bobby Gentry).

If “Artificial Flowers” by Bobby Darren didn’t exist then it would be a composition of my own called Oh Jenny! (Why Did You Run) The real-time described in the 6 minute song is a sudden chance meeting, lasting maybe 15 or 20 seconds, of former lovers. It never resolves why “Jenny” bolted but the protagonist ceases to care, despite years of wondering when, having the chance to simply tune around and see for himself, he chooses not to take it .

“What was, what is and what will never be…” He leaves her standing there, his own name uttered in surprise and shock by her as the only word that passed between them.

But, alas, Artificial Flowers does exist and it is hands down the absolute best story song ever and on many many levels. I’m sure if I made a deliberate study of all the story songs out there I’d find, perhaps, many examples that put my own effort in the shade…but I’m not gonna do that…
