Ultra-light liquid hydrogen tanks promise to make jet fuel obsolete
www.newatlas.com ^ | April 21, 2022 | Loz Blain

A revolutionary cryogenic tank design promises to radically boost the range of hydrogen-powered aircraft – to the point where clean, fuel-cell airliners could fly up to four times farther than comparable planes running on today's dirty jet fuel.

Weight is the enemy of all things aerospace – indeed, hydrogen's superior energy storage per weight is what makes it such an attractive alternative to lithium batteries in the aviation world. We've written before about HyPoint's turbo air-cooled fuel cell technology, but its key differentiator in the aviation market is its enormous power density compared with traditional fuel cells. For its high power output, it's extremely lightweight.

Helium would suck as a jet fuel.

I could never understand why Nat gas never caught on for cars.

The “explosion” danger is less than that of a gasoline powered car.

Hydrogen molecules are EXTREMELY small.

Not unlike COVID19 being contained by T-Shirt woven/knot cloth.

It’s a [small?] problem.

You get hydrogen through electrolysis. You run a lot of current through water and it splits into O and H.

Just watch that spark in the center full tank.

I was once thing of setting up an electrolysis apparatus in my vehicle to split the H2O molecules into hydrogen & oxygen then feed that into the fuel/air mixture for greatly increased mileage, but some of those doing that on YouTube said it didn’t quite work as well as expected. You need much greater quantities of hydrogen than could easily be produced on such a small scale apparatus like that to really make it worthwhile.

I have read that hydrogen is a good bonder to substances like borax, which might be a method that can be used to carry hydrogen.

Last I checked, hydrogen has 3 times the energy content of gasoline.

How much can you fit into my 12 gallon gas tank?

Honda builds a nat gas Civic here in Indiana. But the number of available fueling stations is really low, and the cost of a home gas compression rig is quite high.

But the economics seem to work for UPS, a lot of their “last mile” trucks now are nat gas, with on-site fueling at their depots.

It can be done that way or by electrolysis of water. If we achieve fusion reactors there will be fuel forever.

It takes energy to make hydrogen so where is this extra electrical energy coming from and how much does it take to make a cubic liter? Not to mention going boom at first hint of a spark.

As I recall, gasoline is far more energy dense than hydrogen.

Hydrogen is plentiful just needs to be split from water, just need a method by which such a splitting becomes economically feasible, with more energy produced compared to the energy required to split it.

Hydrogen is more combustible than jetA. Sounds dangerous. I won’t fly on one until Air Force One is so equipped.
