Weekly Garden Thread - March 26-April 1, 2022 [Companion Planting Edition]

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

All potatoes are from the Nightshade family.

And, if you are not allergic to shell fish, you can trap them and have a Crayfish boil!

CrayfishParty

A crayfish party is a traditional summertime eating and drinking celebration in the Nordic countries. (Since my Great Uncle Gust was Swedish!)

Yes, they also have them in NOLA!

I was looking through the latest AM Leonard catalog and they had a set up for growing Microgreens for the low, LOW price of $34.62. *Rolleyes*

I want to grow Microgreens, but NOT for $34!

I took seven mushroom containers that I had on hand; seven fit in a standard planting flat. Using a heated nail, I put nine holes in the bottom of each mushroom container and put them in a flat.

I looked on line for the most nutritious micrgreens I could grow and I picked the seven that appealed to me the most: sunflower, spinach, lettuce, arugula, broccoli, radish and basil. I have extra packets of all of those seeds on-hand.

Heading out to the greenhouse to fill my little pots with dirt, water them in, plant the seeds, bring the tray back inside to put under my remaining shelf in the grow rack and we'll see what happens.

Hopefully, THIS:

I'm going to try this method when I plant mixed lettuces and my own onions this spring.
