Weather is definitely warming here in SW Pennsylvania and I have to ask those in a similar zone (5) what is the best time for planting onion and garlic bulbs?

What are the best varieties?

This is also a time for letting others on the thread know that I have hummingbird vine and rose of sharon seeds up the wazoo and will send them to anyone who freep mails me for an address and sends a self-addressed stamped envelope as long as supplies last. This is a good time of year for planting both.

I saw my first robins today!!!!!

Yesterday was so gorgeous I braved the much in the garden and got some buckets set up for bucket carrots and put some seeds in two of them.

I also sprinkled a bunch of scallion seeds in a small section of my raised bed and covered them very lightly with straw.

Anyone here use Real Growers Recharge?

I starting using it about 2 weeks ago and see good growth each time I use it.

Basically instant Compost Tea.

Made it to today! Coffee and the Saturday Morning Garden Thread were my “mental carrots” I had dangling to get through last week.

So - little “accident”. Went to the local garden center on the 7th, slipped in some water, & landed full weight on my right knee - broke the patella in half (2 separate pieces - I saw the x-ray). I had surgery yesterday to repair it. I should be totally good to go/back to normal in 3 months (by July). Meanwhile, I can certainly start seeds in peat pots and I have 2 offers of help to plant things in the garden.

My seeds from Pinetree Gardens are arriving today - yay! I’m now buying eggs from the neighbors (after the fox got all but one of our layers). Looks like with Avian flu or whatever is going around, a lot of commercial flocks are being destroyed & egg prices will be going up.

My niece has pigs again - one is a Gloucester Old Spot - she’ll be raising them for meat & also to help preserve the breed. I looked them up & I think they’ll be nice pigs for her to raise - I can’t wait for bacon, bacon, bacon & lard!!

Happy Saturday to all!

Could you please put me on your list? Even though I live up here, about 150 south of the Arctic Circle, I still have several big gardens and greenhouses, and it’s something that I love to do. It was -1.1 F this morning, though, with three feet of snow on the ground, so planting out is still two months away.

Something ate up all but one of my pea seedlings I planted out. Saw several chewed off at the top so I put some field fence around it. That ruled out the chicken because even though she can fly a little, the opening at the top was only a foot wide. Also no chicken prints in the soil. My field fence doesn’t have smaller openings on the bottom and I did see a rabbit on the property for the first time last year so I suspect that’s what it is. No real bugs out yet. I’ve got some chicken wire I can wrap around the field fence. Will do that today and see if that last pea seedling gets eaten.

I moved the chicken coop up close to the house. Still trying to get the hen in there so I can lock her up. She hasn’t been sleeping in it since I moved it. Would have made it real easy. Just go out after dark and close the door. Going to fill the feeder and watch and wait.

Alligators survive in frozen waters by sticking their nose above the ice and
entering a state of "brumation"

You shall not pass (but it looks like a lot of people have tried; he's an
awfully fat gator).

This past week has been mostly sunny, warm, and dry here in Central Missouri. Mrs. Augie's daffodils and crocus are blooming all over the yard, and the new baby chicks are warm and happy in the chicken house.

Been chipping away at the greenhouse project, and have it mostly completed. I need to put some sheet metal on the outside along the bottom to protect the poly panels from the weed whacker, install the gutter and downspout, and get some gravel down on the floor. Sometime before next fall I'll get the planter boxes built and filled up with nice fluffy dirt.

My seeds arrived from Jung's mid-week, as did the heating mats and temperature controller from Amazon. Air temp was 40° when I went out to check things this morning, and the soil temp in the starter cells was sitting on 65°. I've got the thermostat set on 75°, so it looks like even with the 1" foam board that I installed on the bottom side of the shelves, the mats aren't going to keep up without some help. It's probably good enough for now, but I think I'll need to put a radiant heater of some sort in there for the winter.

20220319_134835

I had just enough potting soil on hand to fill the starter cells. The local nursery opens for retail sales tomorrow, so I'll swing by there after work and pick up some more. If they have tomato plants in the varieties that I want I'll go ahead and grab those while I'm there.

And the fish are biting now too. I caught and caged enough bluegills today to feed half a dozen people. Haven't seen any of my yellow perch yet, but I'll try again tomorrow.

If anyone has any of my cloud files bookmarked, you’ll have to update them. I downsized web hosting to save some money. I had two hosting accounts, one for a single website and one for the rest and it was renewal time and would have been $500 to renew because it wasn’t el cheapo hosting. I was able to add domain names to those old accounts but with the new hosting, I can only have one domain name per account so a few stand-alone websites are now subdomains of one site.

$100/yr is way better than $500/yr

(permasteader.com) is now (permasteader.route66custom.com) and as such, all the cloud file share links are new. Got the cloud reinstalled on the new subdomain this morning and just finished updating the 34 share links on my profile page. Had to recreate them within nextcloud which took a little while waiting for 34 pages to load, copying the links and pasting into my profile page html file.
