Daryl Hall said that Eddie Van Halen once asked him about replacing David Lee Roth in Van Halen.
"Yeah... actually yes," the Hall & Oates frontman said with a big laugh when asked about the rumor during an interview on Q104.3. "I knew those guys really well and we actually shared some people - crew and things like that. Eddie came to a show with [his then-wife] Valerie [Bertinelli], and David had just left the band. Eddie said, 'do you wanna join Van Halen, man?' He was half-joking, but I think he was serious, I really do believe he was serious. And I took it seriously, I said, 'ehh I think not, I think I got my own shit going on.'"
Sammy Hagar instead became Van Halen's second lead singer, releasing four chart-topping albums with the group between 1986 and 1995. Before connecting with the "I Can't Drive 55" star, Van Halen reportedly also approached Journey singer Steve Perry and Scandal's Patty Smyth about working together, and considered recording an album with a variety of lead singers, including Joe Cocker.
Hall also confirmed that Eddie credited the keyboard riff from Hall & Oates' No. 1 single "Kiss on My List" with inspiring his band's biggest hit. "That's what he always told me, he said that inspired 'Jump'."
On April 1, Hall will release BeforeAfter, a two-disc collection of his solo work. He'll launch a two-week tour the same day, with Todd Rundgren serving as the opening act.
I got to see Hall & Oates in 1976 at The Tower Theater and Todd Rundgren there in 1974. A great time in Philly music. I lived just a few houses from Grover Washington Jr. A constant who’s who rolling in and out of his driveway. Back before limousine entitled bunches.
Imagine Pretty Woman followed by Maneater.
Saw him perform with Ringo Starr and his All-Star band. Now THAT was geezer rock!
Abandoned Luncheonette and Bigger than both Of Us, are to me the best of their work ever.
(Back Together Again) the opening song.
quite sure ed was drunk....
“You’re just a gigolo...”
Not a remotely viable alternative to David Lee Roth
So it might have been Van Hall instead of Van Hagar?
A two week tour eh?
The Tower is a great venue!I saw many shows there growing up in Delaware County in the 70s.

I find stories like this interesting. I can relate. Some songs can inspire creation of a song. Sometimes in creating a song I have felt I lifted it from another one but then someone else will listen to the two songs and say they are nothing alike.
Same here. I see nothing in “Your Kiss” that sounds anything like Jump yet I believe the story. That is how the creative process can work.
I recently saw them saying exactly that.
Michael Jackson approached them one day and apologized for lifting one of their songs as inspiration to use for Billie Jean(?).
Neither one of them could figure out what the connection was between their song and what Michael wound up with.
“Neither one of them could figure out what the connection was between their song and what Michael wound up with.”
But to the composer there is a real tangible connection.
Then there is also the execution of the idea which often changes the sound, tempo, arrangement such that the original idea that seemed copied no longer sounds like it did at the beginning.
I think Hall and Oates were agreeing with you.
